New download, in the category "Planes that say ooooh!"

The Hawker Tempest MkVI

Very nice plane - strange engine - seems to cause little blue flames.

Anyway, some viewers paying attention may notice the open Cowlflaps on take-off. Didn't know i'd opened them.

Here a really stupid question: What are those flaps and what do they do?  :-[














I was paying so much attention on taking the second shot i nearly went of the tarmac...  :-[ again ...  ;)

To answer your question, cowl flaps help in engine cooling while on the ground and at low airspeeds. They produce drag so they are usually retracted at higher speeds.

I like the subtle bounce characteristics on landing and the pilot ducks his head when the canopy opens and closes. Very good !
