Approach to Kai Tak....747 Style!

Postby Fly2e » Sat Mar 06, 2004 1:45 pm

Here is the awesome scenery of Kia Tak deigned by our own "Rollerball" once again! For any of you who do not know the history of Kai Tek, it was closed due to the challenging approach! Many heavies have had close call landings and a few mis-haps here. The flight path for landing basically aimed you at a red and white "checkerboard" on a mountain. Once you reached it....you basically turned and hopefully you were lined up. Add a strong cross wind and you were in for one interesting landing!!

stunning shots. Just so you know It was also closed due to its size and age, with it being over 75 years old they decided it was time for a new airport:) although that challenging approach and the incidents it caused sealed the deal

They are beautiful clear shots, as good as I've seen anywhere....

I'd have to be a bit worried altitude wise in the final shot, could you be a fraction high ?    Of I go to find the final exciting instalment... ! !

Bazza,

With the tight turn at low speed and increased drag from full flaps..... airspeed (and lift) must be bleeding off fast.  My guess is that the vertical rate of decent is going to be higher than a "normal" landing ....so the plan will drop hard onto the tarmac and fast..... losing a lot a altitude per kilometer.

best,

...............john

Wow, thats cool scenery- FS9 or FS2002?

I wonder; why not just approach from the normal way- except just wait until you've cleared that mountain in back of the runway approach until you start to descend...rapidly ;)???

P.S.- How does AI traffic handle that airport? ;D
