One can't help thinking, looking at the F-35 powerplant, that a redesign of the concept of Bristol-Siddeley's - and later Rolls-Royce's - Pegasus, would have been a better solution. With the Pegusus, Bristol's solved the problem of fixed wing VTOL flight with only one engine in the 1950s.
Far more dead weight with the dedicated lift fan. It's like the world's gone back 60 years.
