I would definately look at the individual cameras you are wanting to buy.
Look for cameras which are using modern lens fittings. This will mean that you'll be able to buy lenses for your camera well into the future (and if you change the body, the lenses should still fit then too)
Check deals on the cameras
Compare the models you are looking at
Pick a camera which suits your shooting style and has all the right features.
Really though, it is down to the individual camera. I don't personally like the look of most Nikon cameras, I think they can sometimes look a bit plasticy. I like the Canon build quality, but between Nikon and Canon it will be pretty close.
I've typically seen 'student photographers' with Nikon cameras, as they can be very affordable, but most expert and professional photographers I've seen tend to use Canons.
I got a Canon EOS 1000D last Christmas and I am loving it. Your best bet is to go to a photography store and try them out, or just compare the specs and reviews of the cameras you are looking at.
