Arundel revisited

Postby Hagar » Sat Feb 28, 2009 10:59 am

Arundel is one of those places that has everything any visitor to this country could wish for. Forget the big cities like London. This is one of the first places I would take a tourist to. A historic English town in an idyllic setting by the River Arun with old buildings, a beautiful cathedral & dominated by one of the few complete castles still standing. What more could you wish for? I've lived in this area all my life & the first sight of the town from the main road still takes my breath away.

I can't possibly show you all of it so here's a few selected views from my visit yesterday. This is where I got off the bus.
Image

I started from the main part of town & walked up the river bank towards Swanbourne Lake, a local beauty spot. This is looking back towards the town with the cathedral on the left, the castle on the right & the 14th Century church of St Nicholas between them.
Image

Looking in the other direction towards the rolling South Downs. This is a typical sight from anywhere in the Sussex countryside.

Several miles further on, looking down on Swanbourne Lake at the way I've just come. I walked along the footpath from right to left & followed it up the hill. A Ju 88 bomber crashed in the lake in August 1940 after being shot down by Hurricanes based at RAF Tangmere just a few miles away.
Image

This might be familiar to Dr Who fans. It was featured in one of the old series. Not part of the castle as some people could be forgiven for thinking but a folly in Arundel Park at the top of the hill. It's named Hiorne Tower after the architect who designed it for the 11th Duke of Norfolk in the 18th Century. It's reputedly haunted by a heartbroken young girl who threw herself off the top after losing her love. The monument on the left is a relic from the Crimean War brought back as a gift to the Duke by Admiral Lord Lyons.
Image

Finally, this one was taken after a nice lunch during a walk along the opposite river bank before heading for home.

Wow. The first one looks like going back in time or something, well minus the cars and street signs.

Thanks chaps. I did a rough map of my little trek (courtesy of Google) to show you where I went.

Great shots Doug, I've never been to Arundel, not my end of the country, but it does look lovely. Fantastic view of the castle over the town,

Steve

Very nice. I agree with you- I don't have much interest in London, but I would love to visit places like this in "exurban" England. And flying over it all would be excellent!
