wow, that's an awful lot of smoke, why would someone bother editing this picture anyways? I mean it's ok and all but give me a break....lol

This would probably have been the first time that engine had been run since it was fitted to the aircraft. The caption says the smoke is caused by "storage oil" or inhibiting oil in the fuel system. This is normal practice & there's nothing unusual about it. Nobody said the engine was being run at full power. The "cars" look like a fire truck & other utility vehicles to me. This again is quite normal.

Well, I know nothing about aircraft engines-but I know with car engines, when they are started for the very first time they smoke A LOT for a little while-this is when the parts are being broken in.  There is a lot of oil left over from when it was built.  Perhaps this is the same kind of thing (do aircraft engines do this?).

I don't know much about jet aircraft. I assume there's some sort of inhibiting oil, an additive in the fuel system that has to be bled off before the engine is run. If you look at that photo (the original at Anet) the smoke is not coming out of the rear of the engine.

It looks kind of like it is coming out of the inboard engine.  If you look, the bottom of the smoke curles up towards the inboard engine-but oyu can't really get a good look at it.  But, the smoke from the inboard (if they are smoking that much) might mask the outboard smoke, just because of how white it is.  You might not be able to see where its coming from.  But, it looks to me like the inside engine is producing at least some of the smoke.  

But, I could be wrong-my eyes can sometimes play tricks on me and I do have a pretty vivid imagination.

It's not a jet but you've obviously never seen an An 2 when it starts up.

This is quite normal, but then again photo's of first engine start ups are quite rare. There is a similar on about of the first engine start of the Nimrod MRA 4 prototype last year, with a similar plume of smoke. As Doug says, it'll be the inhibiting oil and the residue of all the other gunk left in the engine during manufacture...
