Very nice, but it looks as if we see two coastlines on Rottnest?

Yeah i see that too... looks like default and FTX are clashing there or FTX is floating a bit above it and looks a bit like a cliff with water on it ;D

Thanks!!

LOL I thought Rottnest looked wierd but couldn't work out why...too busy looking forward to Perth to pay attention. D'OH!!

Perhaps it's VSX clashing with FTX, apparently they don't work together 100% - but will do in a few months after FTX Aus Blue SP1 and VSX 1.1 come out.

Question Rog, Remember a while back when you were kind of against FSX...

What are your feelings these days?
I know our machines were built exclusively for FS9 and it has been hard to accept the technology we have for what we now need but what is your experience with FSX as best as can be?

Now that you seem to fly it all the time now, you see the advantages and what can be and things to come, correct?

Just imagine when we build again after DX10 is ironed out, etc...

The wait and the "frustration of accepting what our system will allow" will be a thing of the past.

To be honest, with SP2 & acceleration, I can get the exact same experience I did with FS9 if I tone down the sliders a bit. But knowing what I am missing, I have this machine running on the edge of exploding! I have accepted no traffic and lifeless airports for what really matters right now to me in FSX, the flight, in the sky, in the bush, over the waters, at the islands, etc...

It is only a matter of time.

Hell, if FTX was a global addon, I might keep this machine a little longer as it really has changed the environment with zero FPS impact!!  ;)

Dave, I was and still am against FSX for the way it caters to an elite and not to the majority who might like to move up but can't. Even though I can - just about - get it to run on my machine, and look quite good, I still don't think this is fair and on top of that I think it doesn't make sense even financially for MS/Aces to have lots of dissatisfied customers. I'd have liked them to focus more on content, on the environment etc so people don't have to buy FEX or GEX or whatever to make the sim look good, and not make it quite so complex and taxing for today's comps. In a couple of years hardware - and we - will have caught up with FSX. But just as with FS9 no doubt FSXI will be out by then - and of course, what we have will become once again second best. This constant wearying years-long chasing of perfection and catering to an elite is what bothers me extremely about FS. But I've said it all before...whatever....this is reality so all we can do is deal with it.

With FTX now plus other add-ons we can see the potential of FSX really coming out. It's wonderful to fly over such beautiful landscapes, through skies that look almost real, sometimes better than real. Add to that the improved feeling of being there that they got right, the bloom effects which I like, etc etc...and it's undeniable that FSX is now way ahead of FS9 in what it offers by way of the sheer experience of flying.... especially low and slow. And gliding, I love gliding in FSX, it's changed from a rather dull experience in FS9 to perhaps the most exciting element of the sim - will you catch that thermal...or will you keep falling falling falling... and have to find a field PDQ.... for me it really gets the adrenalin going.

You fly low and slow, you don't need to worry about empty major airports.... just bump up and down, head swaying with changes in direction and speed, looking out upon astounding vistas....hopping from airport to airport. If you mainly fly GA or like gliding then FSX is for you.

My flying is centered around taking screenshots though.... and again FSX -with addons - is now the clear winner. It's getting harder and harder to enjoy FS9 even though I can sit in any plane, however complex, and fly wherever I want without tweaking anything. With FSX I have to set up the sliders every time depending on where I want to fly, the kind of pics I want to make. Pictures like those above had me flying a semi-slideshow. But if I only wanted to fly and not take pics, I could easily tweak the sim to give me a much smoother experience.

I think that if you fly airliners FS9 is still the sim to use though. Especially if you like flying those tubes not taking screenshots. And screenshots with FS9 can still look great...FS9 still has a future... REX will be released for FS9 for example - photoreal skies in FS9!!

Very well said Roger. You hit the nail on the head in regards to MS. I agree with you 100%.

Cheers Bob - and may I just add.... it's taken the FTX crew around 18 months to start developing scenery of this quality for FSX. They started work on it in spring 06, I think.

With FS11 even higher levels of detail will be possible - but how long will it take even payware developers to develop meaningful quantities of ultra hi-res scenery? By meaningful I mean enough that you can fly over it for hours.... and it's locally optimised. GEXI maybe okay, but FTXI....and as for freeware guys....they'll be still plugging away at FS9 or maybe X for years more... especially if they have to learn a whole new system when backwards compatibility vanishes - no choice for FS11 is not good for simmers.

I'm sure I'll be proved wrong, and clever people will find a way, but even the 18 months I've been waiting for FTX seems, well, more than too long. Perhaps a new 'automatic scenery generator' will come along...

I'm loving the graphics of FSX, but the FS series may become graphically too demanding for it's own good I think. We'll see  :)

Agree with you 100%. :)

One question, is an airport ICAO (code) of 'YTYA' found in FTX?

I agree Roger but I also understand Microsoft's point of view. It obviously all links together and it's part of a higher strategy that we don't (get to) see (yet).

But if software vendors don't release titles that are demanding faster/better hardware then the hardware vendors will not release that faster/better hardware.
And if faster/better hardware is not available then developers don't have the opportunity to take advantage of that.

It is a vicious circle, really :-/

nice shots krigl! :)

i love FTX, i have FTX and GEX and IMHO FTX is much better! when you fly around the area, it really does immerse you into thet sim, something GEX never really did for me.

GEX and GEXn are 2 different products... dont know if you tried GEXn but its certainly a major step up from the original release.

And, GEX is not competing with FTX, never was

If we spent a year+ designing you would not be getting North America for 29.95... it would be the same cost as FTX

and our textures would not be sat sharpened images either
