Dave, I was and still am against FSX for the way it caters to an elite and not to the majority who might like to move up but can't. Even though I can - just about - get it to run on my machine, and look quite good, I still don't think this is fair and on top of that I think it doesn't make sense even financially for MS/Aces to have lots of dissatisfied customers. I'd have liked them to focus more on content, on the environment etc so people don't have to buy FEX or GEX or whatever to make the sim look good, and not make it quite so complex and taxing for today's comps. In a couple of years hardware - and we - will have caught up with FSX. But just as with FS9 no doubt FSXI will be out by then - and of course, what we have will become once again second best. This constant wearying years-long chasing of perfection and catering to an elite is what bothers me extremely about FS. But I've said it all before...whatever....this is reality so all we can do is deal with it.
With FTX now plus other add-ons we can see the potential of FSX really coming out. It's wonderful to fly over such beautiful landscapes, through skies that look almost real, sometimes better than real. Add to that the improved feeling of being there that they got right, the bloom effects which I like, etc etc...and it's undeniable that FSX is now way ahead of FS9 in what it offers by way of the sheer experience of flying.... especially low and slow. And gliding, I love gliding in FSX, it's changed from a rather dull experience in FS9 to perhaps the most exciting element of the sim - will you catch that thermal...or will you keep falling falling falling... and have to find a field PDQ.... for me it really gets the adrenalin going.
You fly low and slow, you don't need to worry about empty major airports.... just bump up and down, head swaying with changes in direction and speed, looking out upon astounding vistas....hopping from airport to airport. If you mainly fly GA or like gliding then FSX is for you.
My flying is centered around taking screenshots though.... and again FSX -with addons - is now the clear winner. It's getting harder and harder to enjoy FS9 even though I can sit in any plane, however complex, and fly wherever I want without tweaking anything. With FSX I have to set up the sliders every time depending on where I want to fly, the kind of pics I want to make. Pictures like those above had me flying a semi-slideshow. But if I only wanted to fly and not take pics, I could easily tweak the sim to give me a much smoother experience.
I think that if you fly airliners FS9 is still the sim to use though. Especially if you like flying those tubes not taking screenshots. And screenshots with FS9 can still look great...FS9 still has a future... REX will be released for FS9 for example - photoreal skies in FS9!!
