The term "passengers" I think has to be taken in the loosest possible meaning. If hacker that could do this, then he will have to be able to do it in front of an audience and distract them into thinking that he is surfing, spread sheeting or similar I would have though. With todays nosey passengers and a heightened sense of security, if an Arab cannot walk to the toilet with a toothbrush in his hand without being accosted a hacker trying to fly the aircraft from his laptop would have to be really good.

I under stand they ment well, but the FAA should have told them, and not made the part public, to me that is a security measure that the FAA should keep in house between Boeing and the Shareholders.

Although this is being fixed before the plane enters service, you know know some crazy hacker kid is going to try it first chance they get, just so they can say they did.

They might as well make public that if the ATC tower was hacked into and locked out, no plane could plane could land, and they would be able to shut off the beacon too........oh wait they already said that too.

There's nothing in the article as basis for judgement on whether or not these concerns are actually realistic.  It doesn't say that anyone actually was able to hack the system, it says only that the system is suceptable to hacking because the in flight entertainment system is "connected" to the flight controls.  What is "connected"?  Do they share an electrical ground?  Do they all run on the same computer?  There's no indication.

I'm sure Boeing will make changes simply to get the FAA off their backs, but I doubt anyone was stupid enough to make the system truely hacker friendly.  Is there a menu button in the entertainment system that says "take control of plane"  or "do not press this button"?  That's what the article seems to imply.

The "connection" would most likely be that they share a data transfer bus, most possibly ARINC or similar. Running from the same computer, I would put money that would not be the case, in fact I will say it will not be. This is a nice story, but everyone is jumping up and down at nothing. Hacking the video game or inflight movie to take over control of the aircraft, lets think about this for a moment. I only posted this as a bit of light reading. Someone with a vivid imagination at the FAA has had a look and asked what if. Because this has been asked it has to be answered. Then a few imaginations have run wild. No questions are being asked about the A380 and that is on big flying data bus.
