[quote]Heatny it REALLY sounds like you are comparing the A380 to the 787. Look at the 747. It was a success. Look at the A380 which will be the future of travel. It is replacing the 747. That = success. As you stated, "the 787 is replacing the 757/767" That = success! "The 787 is fast" That also sounds like you are comparing with the A380. See there is a tradeoff here: 787=Less passengers/weight and faster. A380=More pax/weight=slower. Your signature is biased against Airbus and is wrong. The 787 or 747-8 part is possible. But you failed to mention the fact that, the Boeing Blended Wing Body is simply a design/experiment and will not enter actual service. You also failed to mention, that the Sonic Cruiser was cancelled, all in an attempt to make Boeing look good and to make Airbus look like the crappy unreliable company. Now, I'm not saying either company is better, I'm saying that each have their own qualities. Boeing has dominated air travel for 30 years now, its time for Airbus to combat it with the A380.

Also, there are a lot of airlines that are not looking for a plane the size of an A380. Also many airlines that already have 747s might stick with the 747. I saw an interview with a guy from Qantas and the guy walking him through the A380 and trying to sell it to Qantas. "Its too big" the Qantas guy said in a whisper voice. Imagine that, Qantas thinking Its too big.

Nick

A most brilliant example. Now tell me, how many A380's have Quanta's ordered now? Didn't they recently order another 20 odd even after delays were announced?

Lol! I was just about to say, Qantas probably wasn't the best example to use to slag off the A380!

But the point fails on the fact that the only source if infomation stating that is from Quantas who obviously really do want that big of an airplane.

Not all airlines go international.

Some do, but would rather stick with either the 747, 767 or the A340.

Some are cutting back on orders because of all the delays.

There are only about 160 orders, which still puts Airbus way behind (last I heard on either the TV or online at their website)

All Im trying to get out is that the A380 might not be a huge success at first.

Just to clear some thing's up:
The 787 is a new all (highly) composite airplane, which is designed to replace the A330, 767 and maybe, if the 787-10 is launched, the 777. It will not and cannot compete with the 757, as the 757 is slightly bigger than a 737-900.

The 787 is on schedule, six 787 fuselages have been created so far, all of them are meeting specifications promised by Boeing, however they are also to heavy for Boeings internal goals. The 7th fuselage is projected to be on target.

Do you honestly think there would be 500 orders for a dream plane? No, as I said the 787 is on schedule and should fly this year.

One thing you can all try with a fully loaded VC10 if you have Kai Tak is to line up on Rwy 13 from taxiway alpha, handbrake "on", engines firewalled, let go the brake and rotate before the numbers. How many fully loaded a/c have that kind of performance today? I think it would be tricky in the A380!!!!!!!

An RR powered 757? Seen them take off faster than F-111s... And a 747SP's MMO is Mach .95, I don't know max cruise....?

Quanta's

QANTAS is an acconym for Queensland And Northern Territory Air Service, thus QANTAS, not Quanta's. Sorry just I'm an Auzzie and......

The bottom line to determine the A380's success, or any plane for that matter is not just whether it takes to the air, but at what cost?

[quote]I heard that they were holding off until Airbus had come up with a way to make the A380 look half decent.

In which case 2008 could be a bit optimistic

And now UPS is canceling their order for 10 A380.

Wonder what they will use instead...the 747-8?

UPS and FEDEX's orders were for 10 freighters each - not all that much in the long term, and space on the production line that can now be made available to customers considering the pax variant. Airbus will probably thank them for cancelling as it means that more resources can be pumped into the more lucrative pax variants in the short term, allowing freighter development later on.

Just as an aside, particularly for those showing "concern" about A380's technical delays, here is an excerpt from the BBC news, 37 years ago today:

[quote] The first jumbo jet carrying fare-paying passengers has arrived at Heathrow airport.

The newly-constructed Boeing 747, Pan Am Flight Two, touched down at Heathrow at 1414GMT today - seven hours late due to technical problems.

The jumbo had brought 324 passengers across the Atlantic from New York to London.

But the return journey to New York did not run so smoothly. Thirty-six of the 153 passengers transferred to other flights after a faulty compressed air bottle, used to blow open the plane's door in an emergency, meant take-off was delayed for four-and-a-half hours at Heathrow.

Safety concerns

This was not the first problem experienced by the 350-ton aircraft during the run-up to its launch into commercial service.

In October 1969 it was revealed there were developmental problems with the Pratt and Whitney JT 9D engines used to power the aircraft, and there were fears the project would be scrapped.

However, Pan Am was confident the problem could be overcome and the jumbo was safe, so production continued.

The previous year there had been concerns about the safety of passengers in an emergency and the logistics of evacuating large numbers of people from the aircraft in a short space of time.

As a result every jumbo jet was fitted with four inflatable chutes down which 80 passengers a minute could slide in an emergency.

But in spite of these problems it is thought the 360-seat 747, now the largest aeroplane on the market, will herald the dawn of a new era in long-distance air travel for a huge number of travellers.

With operating costs dramatically reduced and larger passenger capacity, more people will be able to afford to travel further afield. Travel experts predict that long-distance package holidays will now become more popular.

Pan Am is the first airline to fly the newly-constructed jumbo jet on a commercial basis, having purchased 25 aircraft at a cost of
