Its a pretty common thing on CRJ's. The doors are known to get stuck pretty often, and this was just a slightly more serious case, where they couldn't get the door to open atall, simple solution, and used by many CRJ pilots. Take the door of the hinges, it's what the door is designed to do in an emergency, so not a problem and they could just slip it back on.
