Need some advise!

Postby Gunny04 » Fri Jun 09, 2006 11:11 pm

a close relation of mine has a 1989 Chevy S-10 Blazer with a 4.3 Throttle body injected engine and when you start it, smokes like a mosquito machine..... I was wondering if anyone here knew if it would be bad O-rings in the TBI or Tappet valves or something else, the smoke is white, the old girl used to smoke when started then quit, upon checking the oil, 2 quarts of gasoline! I bought a new TBI unit on ebay and waiting for it to arrive so we can install it and see if she'll quit smoking, but I was wondering if it could be the TBI unit, also the dealership it was bought from locked the keys in it, and somehow jimmied their way through the tailgate and ever since, the tailgate hasnt opened, the cover to the mechanism is busted, and you can turn it by hand, but the tailgate doesnt open, Anyone have an idea how to manually get it open? We use the blazer to haul a boat only and not for day driving, but when the boats not on the trailer and you cant see it when pulling it out of the water........ its painful! So I was wondering if anyone here might have any ideas! Cheers, Gunny, and if you need more info about the problems just ask in reply!

If the smoke is white it is most likely the head-gasket that has gone 'cos that is the usual sign of coolant getting into the engine. Blackish smoke would be the rings.
As for the boot (tailgate) lock it sounds like the garage have bust it, and they are liable for repair/replacement.

A cylinder compression and leak down test would be the first course of action. If possible, check for fault codes.

Yea needs tires, breaks, and the smoke to stop..... The tailgate probably get one from a junkyard, but a guy had the same problem, it was something with the Injection. Hopefully an oil change, new plugs, and a different TBI can fix it...... if not, guess we'll call a junk yard and have em haul her away..... Thing is, it drives nice, sounds really good even though the muffler is 85% of the way non existent (its there but barely) Thanks for the advice! Needed it and keep suggesting things, I wont mind we need the boat in the water (its also fubar and busted) 1985 Century Palomino 19.6 ft that doesnt smoke, but doesnt run right either.... thats why we are trying to get this damn blazer running! Cheers, Gunny
