How do you prefer to land?

Postby chinookie » Wed Aug 11, 2004 6:34 am

Just wondering what method other people prefer to use when landing their planes? Apologies if this poll has been done before - I searched around and couldn't find anything.

Myself, I prefer to use the Virtual cockpit as much as possible, as this gives me the most realisitic (and also the toughest) experience possible. I know if I can land it like this, I'm doing pretty well.

I don't like the 2D panels as I like to look slightly over the panel to get my bearings, and line it up down the center line. Maybe I will use this more when I start doing ILS approaches.  :)

As for the full-screen frontal view, I only use this if I'm flying a new plane and I'm finding it particularly hard to land. Once I've landed it a few times with this method I will then switch to the VC.

As far as I can remember, I've only landed the plane with the external view perhaps 3 or 4 times.  :)

2d view all the time.

Although I can land in 3d view anytime, it's just that 2d view offers smoother gauges and has less impact on FPS :)

Edit: And it makes instrument scanning easier aswell!

Defentely with Nexus...it is nice to see the 3D view at night I guess....but when it comes to flying I like the 2D....it seems to work out better and easier...

I always land with the 2d, the 3d cockpit gauges are too jerky to land with.

I nearly only fly with VC, anything new and old, landing and taking off, i just switch to Tower View, for a close Flyby, and for taking Screens i take the outer View.

Why I fly with VC most is easy for me:

You can't "feel" a sim aircraft in the way you can feel a regular aircraft. While I can land planes easy with no probs without a panel in reality just because it's easy to estimate speed and feel things like descent rate, I find it best to use the 2D panel to land in the sim if you can. I prefer to do it without changing the height of the view as it screws up after landing. As has been said the 3D panel is just too damn jerky to get that real experience of landing, though I must admit I do like taking screenshots of VCs and making 2D cockpits out of them, creates an incredible experience! But yep it's 2D all the way for me.

...main wheels first... ;)...!
LOL...!

Also I always take off, fly and land with the 2D view.
That view is fixed, as it is in a real aeroplane, and for me looking over the coaming in my sim Cessna 152 is exactly the same view as I get in the real Cessna 152... 8)...!
I use the 8-way hat switch, or the keyboard to get the various side views... ;)...!

Swinging round in 3D, VC mode, using the hat switch on the joystick, constantly changes the accurate viewpoint ahead and results in gauging the wrong height when close to the ground... :o...!

Cheers all...!

I think VC is the most realistic view, we have a good FFB Stick, I feel the Aircraft a bit, and i see it from VC, i can "turn my head" everywhere i want. I prefer the 0.50x Zoom in VC, as it gives me a real feeling.

How much you say that "VC is the most realistic view", you are still stuck with a monitor that tries to show the normal 90degree field of vision in just a 30 degree field. This causes unrealistic proportions on runways for example.

But whatever suits your needs  ;)

I only use the VC. For landing it's simple, line up on the runway deploy flaps to required stay in the glide path and don't stall. Who needs gauges? Aslong as you havn't stalled and there are four white lights shining at you then your fine.

I like to use the 2d panel, but I open a small window in the top-left corner, in tower view.  ;D

I personally use VC on the approach, but then i use 2d cockpit for touchdown. wierd, but then i also like to dive at 300 knots at the field, then hit flaps, dive brakes, and gear at 50 feet and pull up. i dont know why, but i find this type of landing fun :o.  ;D
