This is great! My dad just said he would take me Sat or Sun to Opa Locka! I can't wait! What I do? Go in and ask where the FBO office is? How is this done?

FBO stands for Fixed Base Operation. Basically it's just a gas
station for airplanes. They provide a lot of other services.......
aircraft parking, maintenance etc., most importantly, for you books and charts. Every FBO is different. Some don't provide as many services as others, and there's no guarantee that Opa Locka will have the charts BUT most people you talk to at airports will be very friendly and helpful. Just explain what
you want, and the FBO will help you. If they don't have the chart you need, I guarantee someone on the field will. There
are several FBO's to choose from, but I'll just list two that will probably have what you need. Avia Flight Academy(305)681-3110 and Piedmont Aviation(305)688-4148. What your probably looking for is called a (VFR Sectional chart), for South Florida. ;)

Well, I downloaded the SID/STARS collection file from http://www.navdata.at. Now what?

I have got FSNavigator. In which folder do I place these files?

M$-

Did you purchase FSNav or are you on the trial?  If you're on the trial, be forwarned...it will disable after 20 sessions...
Great edit, Bob.

Which file did you download?
The SID/STARs library is aimed at payware (PIC 767, PMDG 737 etc), whose fmc's are able to read them. They are just textfiles, as far as I'm concerned. The PIC 767 has an all-in-one file, while PMDG users have to download SID/STARs files for each airport manually.

And to my limited knowledge, FSNavigator gets information from the simulator itself, right? So if the Sim can't understand the SID/STARs format, your FS Navigator probably won't either.

EDIT: The Pilot in Command 767 doesn't have textfiles, they are in another format. Only the PMDG 737 has the textfile format...sorry for the mistake!

Well, I downloaded the file 767PIC_sidsstars_AIO.zip.(5865 KB)

As for my FSN being a demo, it is indeed a demo. Anyway, I have just used it twice i.e., only 2 MSFS2K2 sessions.

Thanks

EDIT: Ah! Leave it. I don't have 767 PIC program/add-on. 5.5MB download a waste. That's life, I guess. I thought I could use it for FSNavigator.

This is amazing........................so many things to look at. I wanted to buy the Flight plotter rulers but decided not to until I got a green light from here. Is that really neccesary? Man there are so many things to larn to read in that map!

Thanks for all your help guys. I think that is my last question regarding charts. :P

Until you can afford a plotter  you can "ballpark" your courses. Look for your lines of Latitude (running East to West) and Longitude(running North and South). If you look at the chart with all of the text upright, North will be on top. If you  follow a line of Latitude to your right you'll be heading 90degrees and if you head North(straight up),you'll be going
360degrees(or)0degrees, and if you head to the left (West) 270 degrees. Now if you want to go from Miami to Fort Myers, that would be haflway between North and West or "about"315 degrees. That's 360-270=45 then 45+270(45=halfway)=315. It's not very accurate, but it will get you started. Also look at the airways, they have a course(don't confuse this with heading) listed to and from each VOR.    GOOD LUCK!

You can get a little plastic 360 degree protractor and a simple ruler from a stationary store. Those will work in a pinch.

And yes, don't confuse Course and Heading.

Your Heading is the direction your nose is pointed.
Your Course is the direction you need to go, to get to where you want to be. " ;)

I know... It's corny. But, that's the way it was taught to me!

now on an authentic chart you will be looking at True North if using lines of latitude for 090*, unless your plane has a gyro-compass you need to look at the inner circle on the compass rose, and around that inner compass should be the variation and the amount it changes every year, you need to apply that correction to the rose also. this will give you your magnetic  bearing. Which is close enough in this game probably since there really isnt anyway of figuring your deviation without doing a circle to compare the compass bearings against what the mag. bearings are supposed to be. But thats a whole nother story lol
And remember when measuring distance always use the lines of lat. (the sides of the chart), keeping in mind that 1 minute of lat. equals 1 nm.   Hope this helped more than confused, lol

With reference to that Protractor and Rule (cheap from local stationers) it is amazing how accurately you CAN navigate in FS. I found it a great deal of fun and when you checked your position against your calc. and ended up being within a nm or so that was mint!! :) :)

So between the lines of 30 degrees and 27 degrees latitude there is 3nm?

Each degree being a nm?

Noi, that would be 3 degrees, or 60 (number of minutes in a degree) X 3 (27*-30) or 270nm. each degree is broken into 60 minutes (which is 1 nm on the lat. side) and each minute is broken into 60 seconds. this is not a measurement of time, but of distance.  So if you went around the world passing through the N and S poles, you will have traveled 21,600 nm. ( 360* around the world X 60 number of minutes in a degree.
Proper lat and long is written out this way
lat. N 37* 32' 41"
( degrees[*] minutes['] and seconds["]
long. W 045* 39' 25"

Now if you take a nm which is 2000 yds and divide that by 60 (seconds in the minute) you will get 33.33 yds which is the distance in a second of latitude.

I don't quite understand your explanation, 60 X 3 is 180, not 270. I am lost already.

Wow, I must be getting altimers lol. you are right 60 X 3 is 180. So the difference between 27* and 30* is 180 nm.  Very sry about that.
Here is a site dedicated to teaching flight sim navigation. It does nothing else. I just found it last night. Good reading for everyone.
