Installing Aircraft

Postby Hammer » Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:11 am

Right now don't have too much to smile about. Have a multi part question, which I hope the moderator will allow. When I download an aircraft to a temp folder & then want to move it to the aircraft folder in FS2002, I find it on C:\ hard drive. When I try & move it, receive message "can't move, source & destination folder are the same."Aircraft do not show up in FS2002 select aircraft. Probably by accident I have downloaded a half dozen aircraft. Trying to download a P-51 now which doesnt fit the usual pattern. In the sub folders it lists "POD" files. Instructs unzip the "DLL"into the modules\PC directory, unzip all other files into Fly\Aircraft directory. Its the ROTW "BlackCat" P-51D. Any help with this one will be greatly appreciated. Have read tutorial on installing aircraft, thanks.

:)My first question is, was that aircraft designed for Fs2002?  I saw that one of you directories was for Fly which is a different simulator program.

Hammer,

I've run into this problem when downloading an aircraft that contains an application file, like an .exe file that launches the installation of the aircraft to a directory of your choice.

To John P, I really can't tell for sure if the aircraft was designed for FS2002, it was designed by ROTW, the French outfit for FlyII. I have seen in several file libraries,  many downloads that require this download as the original necessary for repaints, so I assumed it would work in FS2002. I consider the panels they have are great & I really want them, the French don't name the sub folders, model, sound, panel texture & cfg like we do.

Erik,
Thanks for the comeback & also for the tip, I'll definitely try it. It can be frustrating knowing where the folders are supposed to go & not being able to get them there. So far, I'v downloaded 2 meljet add ons, 2 P51's, a Supermarine Spitfire, an AD1-H Skyraider, a R4D & a B-25J & I probably couldn't do it again, I don't think they all work the same way. Like they say, "if at first you don't succeed, try & try again". But thanks again to you & John P for the comebacks. Anybody else reading this having any other good hints, I'll certainly appreciate them. :)

:)After reading your reply, it looks like the aircraft in question was designed for Fly 2. If this is the case it will not work in Fs2002. Planes that were designed for other simulator programs will only work for that program.

After viewing the original question in here, I was leaning towards the same thoughts.....his directory indicates a program called "FLY"........I went and installed a CFS2 P-51D Mustang into 2002 (Not the BlackCat version, mind you) and after the normal install, it flew fine........

Rifleman,

Thanks for your reply, I'm still leaning towards the fact that the P51 download (P51bc_P65A.zip) by ROTW for FlyII will load into FS2002. Apparently my procedure for downloading lacks quite a bit, for some reason, I run into quite a bit of difficulty with downloading, as stated, made several successful downloads & had just as many failures.

So far have been unsuccessful trying to track down a web site for ROTW tto check with them about the download. If anybody can furnish any information about a website for ROTW, I really would appreciate it :)

Hammer. I'm almost certain aircraft for Fly II will not work in the M$ sims. They will be in a completely different format. If you're having problems installing stuff, surely the best thing is to try an aircraft designed specifically for FS2002. You're just making things difficult for yourself.  ::)

There's literally 100s of aircraft posted in the FS2002 sections on this site.

:)If you are installing aircraft files, put them in the aircraft folder. Scenery files to scenery folder, gauges to gauges, sound to sound effects to effects, etc. . always check the readme file that comes with a downloaded file to check for special or normal install instructions.

Just a tip from personal experience....

Simulator versions aside, there are several examples of aircraft for FS2002 that have an installer. exe program that self-installs the aircraft into your FS2002 folder. Try and stay away from these. Even though the installer might work fine, you can possibly run into problems trying to find certain files, later, down the road.

It's always a good idea to extract the aircraft to a temporary folder and then copy and paste the contents to the correct folder, manually. Check out your existing aircraft folders to see how they are structured and all your addon installs should go smoothly.
