True Story: With the exception of basic training on every base or TDY assignment I was ever at I was housed where there was a bar just across the street.
Even the at the tech school there was a bar across the street. I got in a wee bit of trouble one day after lunch when the instructor smelled beer on my breath. ;D
When things got slow we would close down early and have 'maintenance meetings' at the NCO bar across where I was housed. It'salmost too conveniant when all you have to do is stumble across a two-lane street and you're home. ;D

During my hot and sandy time, I ended up in the desert in Turkey in a tent. The RAF gave us $33 a day for food???? So it was off to the enlisted mans restaurant to eat for about a $1. Then what to do with the rest............well, when Bacardi Breezers were a dollar a shot and chilled, you work it out ;D

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

We obviously were sent in different directions after Lackland.
(The new) "Milky" Bomb Plot was located at a remote end of the island: the nearest mess was through some jungle and across the old deserted WW2 airfields -- soft drinks, coffee or milk; I don't care much for alcohol-containing drinks so, while bunked at Andersen, I never visited the bar that was some distance across the base -- closest thing to an extreme hang-over was following the typhoon (I wound up in traction from a 'locked' neck; battery acid and, during sunnier days, the major sunburn wasn't all fun, either.
The only place I'd have a (as in one) 14-16oz WVC (whiskey/vodka/CocaCola) was once a weekend at Det.10's Rec Hall (we'd taken over some of the Navy's old WW2 buildings in Nebraska) which was about a mile or two from the site and six or seven from quarters.

I went about 250 miles due south. The enlisted club at Lackland was also just across the street from my dorm. 8-)
