Let's see if Big Truck & Esselbach...

What are you laughing at?

(actually I think it's an RG Scout, but it looks like a mini cougar)
I'm not sure if it has it's own technical name, but I have heard that it's still called a cougar, and is simply a 4x4 variant of the 6x6 we had
If you right-click the px to check 'properties' you will see the px title Marine%20WS%20Sqn%20172.jpg -- which somehow perverted my naming it Marine WS Sqn172. jpg [Marine Wing Support Squadron 172] -- USMC photo by LCpl. Andrew C. Fellows; it's from the OUR ALLIES IN-ARMS section of our TogetherWeServed US Air Force Newsletter.
However, to clarify your suspicions, here is part of an additional write-up on the page, along with the UK (RAF) spellings:
"The first customised Cougar 4x4 vehicles arrived recently at RAF Brize Norton, a month ahead of schedule, where the process of turning them into the new Ridgback protected vehicle will begin... Once fully uparmoured and weaponised the Ridgback will join its bigger brother, the Mastiff, as the new protected vehicle on operations... As a smaller version of the Cougar 6x6 vehicle which underpins Mastiff, the Cougar 4x4 was the natural choice to become the Ridgback protected vehicle."

That's because the file name has spaces in it. Each space is replaced by %20 in the file path. When uploading files it's best to use dashes or underscores to separate words in the file names.

Our Navy EOD had one of those parked next to our cougars. I'm not sure if it has it's own technical name, but I have heard that it's still called a cougar, and is simply a 4x4 variant of the 6x6 we had

You're right, the RG is a bit smaller than the 4x4 cougar

Thanks for the info H, I wasn't aware of that.   I've seen them around base in Hawaii getting tested by the 3rd Marine Regiment, I just assumed it was an oversized RG-31...

Also didn't know they were called Ridgeback's and Mastiff's by the RAF, only heard them called Cougars.

Yep, thats the 4 wheel cougar.
We started getting them is shortly after you guys left Esselbach.  We stopped using the RG's as soon as possible, for reasons you are familiar.

They are okay... they did not have all the room the 6x6 had, obviousy, and because of the single axle in the back they bounced a it more.

Thats my biggest memory riding in the Cougars.  Bouncing. My spine still feels it.

Still beats blowing up though...

True. The Apache was the ground attack variant due to it having the Allison V1710, if memory serves.

As your memory serves, this was actually the A-36 Apache, the Allison-retaining dive-bomber version. This is not to be confused with the P-36 Hawk, the predecessor of the P-40; howbeit, it was a request for North American-built P-40s (which wasn't happening) that produced the P-51, and, thus, the A-36.
It was actually the P-40 that was clouding my mind: Tomahawk, Kittyhawk and Warhawk. I believe the Curtiss name for all proto acft was Hawk with the variation (model) number preceding it. I think the British used mainly the early Tomahawk and the later Kittyhawk variants; the Warhawk variants were mainly, not exclusively, in use by the USAAC.

In most cases the USAAC adopted the RAF names. USAAC aircraft were usually referred to by their official designation with different models identified by a letter suffix - like P-51A, P-51B, P-51C, etc. All RAF aircraft were given an official name with different variants identified by Mark number like Mustang I, Mustang II, Mustang III & so on. I think this is worth a topic of its own.
