Not a city, but Arkansas (Ar-can-saw) always confused me.

From the Mexican, Los Angeles should be 'los an-jhel-es'... (The Angels), but Los An-gee-lees is my personal pronunciation.

Of course, most spellings have been skewed by the horrificness that is American-English. I just refer to it as 'American' as I don't want to put my language to its name  ;) ;D

I think a lot of confusion is due to the appearance of the Spanish/South Americans in California and the surrounding areas, and naming various locations with their own pronunciations, and then the later visitors Anglicising the names... ;)...!

Ta for the link, Doug...>>>

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/san+joaquin

I've been going through some of the pronunciation of "Spanish" names of familiar locations in California!

This one has always had me confused ....
San Joaquin (in the California Central Valley)..>>> San-Wo-Keen... :o....!

...fascinating!
