Why...I don't understand it?

Postby Flying Trucker » Mon Jan 25, 2010 12:13 pm

Goodly morning all... :)

The old girl and I stopped into one of the local bugsmasher fields we frequent for a mug of tea and a chin wag.

You folks know me, the old girl does most of the chin wagging, I only chew the rag when spoken too.   ;D

Well a young aviator dropped in who frequents the spot once or twice a week and he had to have all eight of us walk out and look at his new car.  He is still in school, has a private licence and bums rides in aircraft whenever he can.  Works in a grocery store part time after school and seems like a good lad.
I do believe he wants to be a teacher.

Well the first words out of most of our mouths when we saw this 2010 abortion he called a car was "WOW".
I won't say what make it was but it was a foreign born thing to Canada and had an eight inch ground clearance.
The vehicle only had two seats and the guages we were told can be changed to different colours.  Well diddly do, so can mine in the Land Rover, clean and dirty.

The spoiler on the rear was about the size of a Cessna 140s elevator and the vehicle had a two tone flake paint scheme which in the sunlight one needs a pair of sun glasses to look at.  He will spend a week cleaning the four rims and tires and they looked like something from the dirty 30s.
The engine, well I won't even go there, just hope he don't wrap himself around a tree.

We were told the thing was just past $44,000.00, yup.

His insurance is very expensive as he is only eighteen.

So most folks smiled and lied through their teeth and said they liked it and what a nice looking car.
Me, no way, I asked him when we got inside why he didn't buy a used pick-up truck like most of the young lads around and he could have also bought a good Cessna 140, 150, 152 or a good Piper 140 or any number of bugsmashers and still been under the $44,000.00.

He bought this abortion because some of his friends have sporty cars and they were talking about it during a spare class.  He went into the car dealership to look and the next thing he knew the salesman had done everything for him including arranging financing and insurance.  Highly illegal and unethical in Canada I believe.

He was told he now has a credit rating and I said yes and an empty wallet.  (I thought about the empty wallet matching his empty head but kept my mouth shut because the old girl was already glaring at me).

Well we said our niceties, left and I chewed about that all the way home.
The old girl, well she said I hope I don't get involved if any of the grandchildren want to buy something they want.

Me, me, me get involved, really?

And all the banks and financing firms wonder why they went bankrupt?  It is still too easy to buy things today with nothing more than a signature, and THAT my friends is why we are in a recession, and that alone.

Are you sure it had a spoiler or a wing? Come to England and you'll soon find that to the common 'car modder' it doesn't matter as they think they do the same thing. They also believe loud music, tinted windows and a hideous paint scheme (because the money used to pay for painting the body kit went towards a Friday night binge drink) will make their car go faster.

If the car looked nice, then I suppose that's not quite so bad, but if laws go against it then it's not very good either way. A car is something that should look pretty, so if you're able to modify it properly and enhance its image, then it's not always a bad thing.

He should have gone with a motorbike, like myself. Just got a Honda CBF250 for <$2000...  ;)
Although I can see how that might be impractical in Canada.  8-)

Been thinking about what $44,000 would have bought when I was 18 - boggles the mind.

Expensive, impractical cars like that never made much sense to me. Sure, nice is one thing, but that's just over the top.

When we got back from Iraq, a lot of guys had too much cash burning holes in their pockets and bought brand new vehicles with their new found riches. Me? I bought a nice little used 6 year old car instead to spend my money on other more fun things... ;D

New cars are not for me either. I like having something that I can do the maintenance on. The trick is finding a car that you can work on if need be, but don't have to work on all the time. I think I found that in my old '91 Honda Accord. ;)

Hmm, I don't see what the problem is with spending a large sum of money on modifying a vehicle, as long as the modifications are practical and serve some purpose apart from aesthetics.

For my first car, I intend to buy a '97 model BMW 750iL, and modify it later on by bulletproofing the bodywork and windows, installing satellite communications and taking measures to make sure that it is radiation, chemical and biological resistant as well as immune to the effects of EMP.

To me, that is money well spent as it doesn't assist with my "street image" (whatever that is), just my safety.

There is a difference between me being able to afford buying my used motorcycle for a few thousand dollars with cash straight up, and the 18 year old going into debt to buy a $44,000 car.... ;D

Oh, I don't think the British police will take too kindly to a car bristling with .30cals, rockets and caltrops. I'll try to at least have self-inflating tyres. ;)

When you have a car that is armed and armored, you don't care what anyone thinks.   ;D
