A question for our American friends...

If it doesn't fit .. It fits here .. - -

The Pacific Northwest may have been forgotten, but that doesn't mean we don't have anything significant here. We still have Mt Rainier, Mt St. Helens, and several other mountains and volcanoes.  There is a LOT of farmland here in the Pacific Northwest, lots of beautifull forests to explore, and a lot of other things to see and do.

Agreed  :)  (I was being tongue-n-cheek)..

It's one of my favorite places to visit..  The train from Chicago to Seattle is breath-taking..  It's a lot like my homeland, with mountains thrown in.. AND some of the most spectacular flying in the world..  :)

..another question....

"Washington"

When someone is going to "Washington", or mentions "Washington", how do we know whether they are referring to The State of Washington, or the Capital; Washington DC...(District of Columbia)...?

Same name, two entirely different places in the U.S.... ::)...!

Paul The Confused... ;)...!

Brits and non-Americans will probably say 'Washington' for the capital. I would say Washington for the state... And D.C, or Washington D.C for the capital.

Suppose you have to know the states before hand to get it.

One ticket to Port Angeles, Washington via D.C, please.

You hear even less about Oregon though. Can anyone even think of anything that's there?

Sure, Oregon has Crater Lake National Park, Mt. Hood, is home of the Spruce Goose, has a great coast, and has lots of productive farmland. The cascades extend down into Oregon, the columbia river flows into oregon, and there are also lots of dense forests in Oregon to enjoy. ;)

At first reading I thought to quip, "Of course they mean D.C. -- who'd want to go to the state of Washington?" Esselbach has given actual reason why, however:

I was only kidding about Sea- I mean, Washington; it's actually a place I'd love to visit.
But Oregon- hooboy, don't get me started!
;D

Reminds me that the only person I ever met from Oregon was from a little town called Sweet Home. He was pretty homesick.

I wonder the same thing.  I live in the US and I am not actually sure where the Washington Redskins play, since I never travel to DC or Washington state.

Now I'm thinking about how a pro football team based in D.C. could be named after a people so oppressed by the US government?.........Dont respond to that ;D

But I must ...

In one of the most idiotic decisions in all of amateur sports the NCAA took it upon itself to determine that native Americans might not like being named college mascots and banned several "offensive" mascots.  The NCAA never bothered to ask the native Americans.

Link

Among the banned were:

   *  Alcorn State University (Braves)
   * Central Michigan University (Chippewas)
   * Catawba College (Indians)
   * Florida State University (Seminoles)
   * Midwestern State University (Indians)
   * University of Utah (Utes)
   * Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians)
   * Carthage College (Redmen)
   * Bradley University (Braves)
   * Arkansas State University (Indians)
   * Chowan College (Braves)
   * University of Illinois-Champaign (Illini)
   * University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians)
   * McMurry University (Indians)
   * Mississippi College (Choctaws)
   * Newberry College (Indians)
   * University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux)
   * Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages)

The NCAA was surprised to find that the Seminole tribe was honored to be the team mascot and had to reverse its condemnation of the school.  Go 'Noles!

A map which I find fascinating, and keep in my Map Folder for general Information:

Ethnic origins of Folks in the U.S.A...>>>

As you can see, although the Germans lost the war in Europe, they didn't have any problems with the invasion of North America!... ;D...!

(Andrew...take note!..;)...)....!

...and as for the State of Oregon....I always find it very scary during my Sim Flights north of California....populated by very strange Oregano Folks...and Bears...and lots, and lots of Trees!... :o...!

There always seems to be something very secretive about the State of Oregon!

Paul... ;)...!

My German ancestors came over from Germany towards the end of the 19th century, before the wars, so it wasn't us... ;D
