Can government/military monitor personal GPS usage

Postby fulanito_uk » Fri Oct 12, 2007 12:49 pm

Hi just a comment a military friend made to me, which i very much doubt but...

he told me that the government/military can track the useage of a personal GPS device? i doubt it as it is only a receiver not a transceiver? therefore for instance someone can use thier GPS in a restiricted zone, and while i'm sure they would get caught it would'nt be from the use of the GPS unit right?

Your friend is clearly talking rubbish. Like you said a GPS system is a receiver only. The way it works is that it can detect at least three satellites in the sky above you and then using some clever geometry it can calculate your position within 10 meters or so ;)
