On the surface, it sounds ridiculous, but the impetus for the ban is sound.

I think the best way to approach this problem is to post signage that instructs potential poppers to set the microwave to no more than one minute and 45 seconds. This is for how long I pop mine and I always get a full pop with very few unpopped colonels...

That makes too much sense.

It depends upon the specific bag and, particularly, microwave; mine doesn't even get the popping started until about two minutes -- three-and-a-half minutes for completion. That's one reason instructions are usually included not to leave a microwave oven unattended while in use.

I wish they would have banned microwave popcorn in my college dorm.

If only they could invent a smoke detector that could snifff the smell of burned popcorn and ignore that smoke.
How about installing detectors in the ovens so the ovens automatically shut off, inventive geniuses...* ::)

Just read the Instructions, don't place it upside down and don't go over specified times. I can see, cooperations putting security cameras pointed at the microwave to catch the suspects. ;)

How friggin' difficult is it to stand next to a microwave for 3 minutes (max) to ensure your popcorn doesn't burn??

Funny story. Not at the time, but it is now. A few of us have microwaves in our building. One night, one guy wanted to cook some popcorn. Not unusual. Since most people don't have microwaves, I let a lot of guys use it to cook popcorn, soup, noodles, ect. One night, one guy wanted to cook some jalapenio flavoured popcorn. He threw it in the microwave and left the room. Several minutes later, he opened it up and the smoke poured into the room. It wasn't just smoke, it was similar to CS gas. It only took a few moments for me to start coughing, and my eyes, face, mouth, and throat to start burning. It took 45 minutes before the room was somewhat tolerable again...
