Intrepid is stuck!

Postby beaky » Mon Nov 06, 2006 8:22 pm

I was bummed that I wouldn't get to go watch this today, but I'm glad now that I missed it. A little embarassing...
Maybe the old girl doesn't want to be towed stern-first, despite all the honors...
I hope they find a solution- this is a very important piece of US history that should be kept in good condition.

How on earth did they foul that one up? They even dredged a channel for the ship to go down. How could they have run out of water? :P :-/

I'm glad I didn't bid in that ebay auction to spend $100,000 to spend three days as a sailor. :P

What they really need to do now is get lots of tugs. More than five, for sure, to heave it out of where it's stuck, then they can [hopefully] get the Intrepid back on course. (Of course, this would be a risky manoeuver and may damage the Intrepid, but isn't it a little embarrassing for a ship that survived 5 kamikaze attacks to get bogged down in a river? :D)

What they need is to get the dredgers back in to do their job properly. :P

Problem is when a ship sits in shallow water for a long time, it gets silted in.  The reports I've read said it had about 17 feet of the silt and mud built up around it, basically grounding it.  Dredging only goes so far, because you can't dredge under the ship.  From what I've heard, the biggest problem is the props, they are what is stuck in the mud, big time.  Like having several huge immovable anchors.

get her back on course?

where is she going?

i thought it was just overhauls?

I went to the intrepid a couple of years ago. Great place to go visit.

I heard that the ship was so badly damaged by kamikaze attacks that it was engulfed in flames and the skipper gave the order to abandon ship, but the PA system was broke down in the attack so the sailors never got the order and faught the fires and repaired the damage and kept her afloat!

A different breed of people back then.

It was decommisioned in Rhode Island in 1974, and eventually was towed to NYC (probably with seagoing Navy tugs), where it opened as a museum in 1982.

She was in private hands then. Not part of the navy. So they'd have been civilian tugs. Which is no bad thing, the most powerful tugs in the world are civilian and make most navy tugs look like bath toys.
