Einstein's tiny portion (E=MC2) of the Special Theory (not "Law", but "Theory") of Relativity and everything else aside, we won't know for sure if the speed of light is the absolute limit until we try it.
Wouldn't be the first time empirical science proved theorists wrong: at one time it was believed that an aircraft approaching Mach 1 would produce infinite drag. ...

And to wit that comparison: remember also that at one time heavier-than-air flight was considered flat-out impossible by some of the most respected scientists in the world, even after the Wright Bros. published their claims!!

The people who made those claims should have known better.  After all, humans had witnessed things traveling faster than sound and heavier than air in the sky: meteors and birds.  Dismissing something as well founded as our scientific beliefs in the speed of light as an absolute maximum speed because people in the past were wrong about similar sounding stuff is a bit premature.  In order to make a serious assault on Einstein we should at least have some observable evidence that exceeding the speed of light has occured, by some object, at some time, somewhere in the universe.  We don't.  But prior to human flight we had birds and prior to Mach 1 we had meteors.

Think I understand what you're getting at but presumably if something travelled faster than light nobody could possibly see it. This could explain some of the phenomena that people are convinced they experience, including UFOs. These could also be optical illusions or pure imagination.

PS. I once saw a UFO. It was reported by many others all over the South of England. I was never satisfied by the various explanations but I never believed for one moment that it had anything to do with aliens.

mans biggest achievment is to put a man on the moon, we avent even walked on mars yet, so who are we to say there is nothing out there? How can you say there is nothing interesting here for them? After all look how a baby is fascinated by everything because it doesn't know what anything is. A remote control to us is an innatible object that changes over the tv, an alien would find it a fascinating object and try to study it because it wouldn't know what it does. We think we are the dominant species on this planet and we are, but until we have seen every corner of the universe then we cant say we are the most intelligent and dominant species of the universe, because it cant be proven yet

I think an alien with the ability to visit this planet at will would find that very primitive technology indeed. Of course, like so many others you're assuming that aliens are similar to human beings. It's more than likely that, if such a thing exists, these alien life forms would bear no resemblance to anything we're familiar with. It's also quite likely that we wouldn't recognise one if we saw it.

However if a race of ETs had laser weapons, yet they saw a tank fire or an m16 fire, because it reacts differently would they not find it amazing? It doesn't matter that the weapons aren't as powerful as theirs but the fact that it fires bullets or shells would make it interesting to them, just as laser weapons would be interesting to us. As i have told others, our planet is a small speck in the universe, there are billions of stars and planets out there, who is to say there is nothing on them when our planet supports life? Come on we can't be the only ones. And i bet their are aliens saying the same thing as us. We can only advance in technology with the natural materials we have on this planet (Metal, fuel, oil etc...) So basically there could be some sort of super fuel on other planets which make it easier and faster to travel, but we cant prove that either way. Just like we can't prove that other races have a higher power of intelligence than us. For example it took cavemen 10,000 years to learn that if they put a sharp stone on their stick, they had a sharp stabbing weapon to hunt with. Man's intelligence in evolution took a very long time, and now we are very quickly learning new things, but still not found cures for cancer or interplanitary travel
