Why not NDBs? There are still some airports with published NDB approaches... not that it's likely you'd be landing there in an airliner...
...funny that......!
I use NDB's (and VOR's) all the time, to guide me in the general direction of my intended flight, so that I don't get completely lost...as I may...
..but for the occasional Instrument landing under VFR situations, (not very often), I just dial in the ILS frequency on my NAV radio and punch in "APR" and let my little Cessna 152 make its way in the general direction of the the runway thresh-hold...
..and if all goes well, and ATC are happy that I am likely to land at the correct runway, (very doubtful), then all is fine and I don't get an official letter of complaint from them involving the incineration of my PPL Licence in a couple of days time......!
...it's all a matter of chance....trust me......!
LOL......!
Paul......!
OK, I had a go in the 172 and cessna careven(sp?)
I have not worked it all out yet but i did a rectangle traffic pattern in the 172 with a landing at 70knots, but as I lined up, for decent I clipped the side of the grass but then ended straight on the runway , so i was happy.
In the other bigger cessna i flew from king island to morabbin airport, and left in on auto pilot at 6,000feet and walked to the shop for pizza lol, anyhow I manually lined my self up, just by eye and checking the map when i was about 25miles away. I hit the ground a bit on the grass again, but i was satisfied since i used flaps and and trip for a soft landing. Manged to play with the air traffic control too requesting 35l. then taxi'ed to parking and shut the engines off.
Phew!
Manual Flying is the way to go for me.... although I am using the GPS more frequently lately! Fozzie's AP is very useful in MP as we can all form on him or practice strafing runs in the seafires ;D
Cheers
Soui.... ( who thinks Fozzie is great for target practice!) ;D
