Welcome, Morphix!
I'd like to toss in my two cents, if you don't mind...
Sure the Cessna is slow, but if you really don't have a firm grip on the basics, you'll just have more frustration ahead with the big jets.
I'd suggest using something small and slow and simple for at least learning the basics- try a few takeoffs and landings in the !72 or whatever; fly a standard rectangular traffic pattern until you understand what's what. The 172 may be  a snail compared to a 747, but believe me, even at 60-100 knots, learning to properly fly a pattern from takeoff roll to taxiway exit is not boring! It's not exactly fun at first, either- but you get the idea. The same basic rules apply no matter what the airplane, and after all, those 747 captains didn't start out in a heavy transport, they very likely took their first flight in a 172.
As for more advanced stuff: the default 172 also has an autopilot and is equipped for instrument flight, including ILS approaches. If you really want to properly fly an ILS approach, you'll do better at first in something slower... when that gets boring, take a break and try to fly the 747 under a bridge or something. But I highly recommend building your skillset from the ground up, if you know what I mean.
I don't highly recommend the program's flight lessons (kinda glitchy, I've found), but it's worth a look-see to at least learn how to proceed.
FS9 is really more like a real-world simulator than it is a game, and there's potentially a lot more to it than just having fun- there's the satisfaction of conquering challenges through application of correct procedures.
BTW, if you do go back to the 172, I'd recommend you download the very nice (and very free) Real Air Cessna 172; it handles much more realistically than the default FS9 version... but it's not any faster, sorry.
Good luck!

Why not NDBs? There are still some airports with published NDB approaches... not that it's likely you'd be landing there in an airliner... ;D

OK, I had a go in the 172 and cessna careven(sp?)

I have not worked it all out yet but i did a rectangle traffic pattern in the 172 with a landing at 70knots, but as I lined up, for decent I clipped the side of the grass but then ended straight on the runway , so i was happy.

In the other bigger cessna i flew from king island to morabbin airport, and left in on auto pilot at 6,000feet and walked to the shop for pizza lol, anyhow I manually lined my self up, just by eye and checking the map when i was about 25miles away. I hit the ground a bit on the grass again, but i was satisfied since i used flaps and and trip for a soft landing. Manged to play with the air traffic control too requesting 35l. then taxi'ed to parking and shut the engines off.

Phew!

...funny that... ;)...!

I use NDB's (and VOR's) all the time, to guide me in the general direction of my intended flight, so that I don't get completely lost...as I may...
..but for the occasional Instrument landing under VFR situations, (not very often), I just dial in the ILS frequency on my NAV radio and punch in "APR" and let my little Cessna 152 make its way in the general direction of the the runway thresh-hold...
..and if all goes well, and ATC are happy that I am likely to land at the correct runway, (very doubtful), then all is fine and I don't get an official letter of complaint from them involving the incineration of my PPL Licence in a couple of days time... ;D...!
...it's all a matter of chance....trust me... ;)...!
LOL... ;D...!

*sputter* Using an autopilot ... in a 152?!?! What in the- ?! Abomination!!
(runs to get torch, pitchfork and rope)

My favorite thing about my fabulous Flight One payware C152 is that it has no AP; not even a wing-leveler.
I haven't flown an NDB approach in it yet, but it should be interesting... ;D

Hey, wait a sec... this isn't the MSFS2004 forum.... :P

Manual Flying is the way to go for me.... altghough I am using the GPS more frequently lately! Fozzie's AP is very usefull in MP as we can all form on him or practice strafing runs in the seafires ;D

Cheers

Soui.... ( who thinks Fozzie is great for target practice!) ;D

Well, there's hope for you yet, mate. ;)
sounds like maybe you're not compensating for wind on the approach, but no matter- I'll bet you're seeing how much easier it is to work on this stuff in more forgiving aircraft (although the Caravan is a bit of a beast). Well, it's challenging for sure, but the desired results are more within reach, right?
Keep up the good work (move up to a light twin, maybe, then a jet trainer- check out the zillions of freeware aircraft available here and elsewhere!), and feel free, whenever you have a question or problem, to rattle the cages of old smart-asses like myself and Fozzer- we're not only FS addicts, we're RL pilots as well.
