I'm not sure of the current going price & this would depend on the Mark & how rare it is. All Spitfires are rare but some are rarer than others. Also the condition. Peter Teichman, a fairly new warbird operator on the scene, mumbled something in passing at Old Warden about a basket-case Spitfire he's just purchased. I think this was a Mk IX & don't know the full details or how much he paid for it. He recently purchased the former RACo PR XI to go along with his P-51D "Jumpin' Jacques' & Beech Staggerwing that he keeps at North Weald. He must be a very wealthy man. I understand he's in the baby carriage business so business must be booming. :D

I reckon about

I think you've got it right! Igs, Mark ( aka Ozzy) our local spitfire counterfit-person could give you a rough idea of what it costs. Not only money, but also the room it takes and the bearing on general family life, as he's in the proces of building a home-built-counterfit Spitfire called Binky...

I'm guessing it would cost a lot more to buy an airworthy Spit  ;D

Oops. Freudian slip. :D

Probably stand more chance of actually flying it & much safer too. Sorry Mark but much as I admire you, you know my feelings on the subject. ;)

Every spitfire is airworthy...

Well this one isn't.

Not yet anyway. MarK told me that it's due for restoration after the exhibition is finished. I'm not sure if this is to airworthy or static display condition. I would hope it will be airworthy one day as this is the later Mk 22 which is one of the rarer ones.

On top of the buying costs of the spit, you also have to think about the Insurance costs, maintainance costs, hangerage, fuel, and landing fee's for starters........

would work out cheaper to buy a share in one and split the costs that way......*speaking from people who own shares in a TBM700 who i know*

Simple answer LOTS!
To buy a servicable one you're looking at one and a half million quid starting price, more for a rarer model.
Keeping her flying can realistically cost between 10 and 50 thousand a year (not including fuel, oil, insurance, landing fees etc just maint.). An engine rebuild is about 40 thousand, and needs to be done every closed season. It is a lot of dough. So realistically 100,000 pounds a year.
I've invested a lot of time and money into Binky already! I've also spent a lot of time learning how to make aircraft from metal sheets. I have one big advantage in that my father-in-law used to maintain aircraft for the Hungarian Army and is now a retired engineer with two whole tooled-up workshops. Talk about someone who knows what he is doing ;D
There are many replica Spits around now, but for me it is the real-deal or nowt I'm afraid... some parts are giving me a headache! Oh and if you know of any parts let me know ;)
Oh and Doug according to the rumour mill the 22 will be restored to airworthy condition, what a sight she'll be 8)

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

All depends on the Mk and the history. As an example I can quote...

In 1995(ish) PS853 was sold for around

I can only think of 6 that aren't privately owned - the 5 BBMF examples and the Israeli Mk IX... Around the world the list fluctuates around the 50 mark...
