Of course. You must trust the system or it couldn't work. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be vigilant. The problem with having blind faith in anything is that someone can, & probably will, abuse it. Most people, including judges, would believe a police officer's word against a member of the public even when the member of the public is telling the truth. The same applies to a prison officer & a convicted criminal. This is fine providing that police officer or prison guard isn't one of those rotten apples.

I agree with you, Hagar (go figure lol) but if it came down to the word of a police officer or a word of a convicted felon, I've gotta go with the cop.  Thankfully, it's not often that the case solely lies on that evidence...if the evidence shows that the testimony of the criminal is more likely, I have no problem siding with the criminal.  I'm just expressing my thoughts on this case as it was presented.  The facts were put up as an inmate who died as a result of the taser.  It says that he was shocked five times during the arrest and 4 times in the cell.  Based on THOSE facts, I'm supporting the officers.  The fact that this meathead was in jail tells me that he wasn't exactly the model citizen.  The law of probability suggests that there's a high likelihood that the now deceased idiot was behaving inappropriately, and my sympathy is not on his side.

That said, it's also worth noting that the question (as with all public opinion polls) is worded in a very biased manner.  "Who is at fault here, the inmate for resisting or the officers for tasing the individual so many times?"

An unbiased question would have been "Who, if anyone, is to blame?"  

This isn't to slam Papa's post...it's just to point out that when you see questions like this, look at the wording before you answer...

No, getting tasered is like getting kicked in the face and chest. Trust me, there's a HUGE difference in the voltage between a taser and a bulb.

Scottler...no offence taken. In hindsight I should have worded the question differently. Here is the article from our local paper. As you can see he was combative initially.



Turner, a Scott High graduate who was 6-foot, 3-inches and 220 pounds, was shocked five times with a Taser stun gun by Toledo police during his arrest Jan. 31 outside the Toledo Museum of Art. He was later shocked four more times with a different model Taser gun by county jail officials. All nine hits from the guns, which discharge a five-second jolt of 50,000 volts of electricity each, occurred within a three-hour period.

City police approached Turner outside the art museum after security there reported a suspicious man had been loitering outside the closed museum for more than 40 minutes. Arresting officers said they used a Taser to subdue Turner after he refused to identify himself or cooperate with questions and then fought being taken into custody.

After he was carried into the county jail, Turner was booked and ate a boxed lunch before becoming agitated again in his cell. He refused attempts to restrain him and corrections officers then shocked him with a Taser.

A nurse dispatched to Turner's cell as a matter of procedure after the stun gun's use discovered he was unresponsive. He died a short time later at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

No criminal or administrative charges were filed against the jail officials. City police officers also faced no criminal charges, but four police officers and a sergeant were administratively charged for improperly handcuffing Turner at the time of his arrest. Hearings on the charges were set for last month but were continued. No new dates have been set.
