Another thought occurred. How do you pronounce the De in De Havilland? I always used the anglicised "Dee" Havilland rather than the French "Der". ;)

I'm biased, of course, since the prefix "de" is very common in Spanish, as well.  I go for "deh". ("Der" seems more Teutonic than Gallic)

Gentlemen:

Here in Canada, I found most of us pronounce the "de or De" as "dee".

I was under the impression that this was of German or Dutch origin meaning "of or belonging to"?
Sorry, but other languages were not of my greatest skill.
Hell, I still have a problem with the Queen's English :).

Also Felix I did not see any mention of A.V.ROE which I thought pre-dated the First World War?

I am still searching sites but PLEASE jump in with your inputs...they are very much APPRECIATED!!!

Cheers...Happy Landings....Doug

Doug. I think Felix only listed a few examples from memory. Did you check out my link? http://www.britishaircraft.co.uk/
This is by no means definitive but lists the major manufacturers. For example.
Company Name:
A.V.Roe & Company Limited

Formed:
1910

Sites:
Brownsfield Mills, Manchester
Brooklands Aerodrome
Clifton Street, Manchester
Shoreham Aerodrome
Newton Heath, Manchester
Hamble Aerodrome
Middleton, Manchester
Failsworth, Manchester
Woodford Aerodrome
Chadderton, Manchester
Yeadon Aerodrome
Ringway Aerodrome

History

1910:
A.V.Roe & Company formed

1913:
A.V.Roe & Company Limited registered

1963:
Avro becomes part of Hawker Siddeley Aviation

PS. "Dee" would be the anglicised pronunciation. I'm guessing your friends in Quebec would pronounce it the French way. The nearest I can get to it is "Der" with the R not emphasised as in German.

I found this list of British aircraft companies. From quick glance it seems fairly comprehensive.

I have no idea what the numbers mean.
