FSX default P51 failure

Postby DenisH » Sun Jan 16, 2011 12:37 pm

After a year of flying most default  FSX aircraft with no problems, I flew the default P51 for the first time yesterady and it "caught fire" after takeoff. The engine failed at about 500 ft  and I crash landed. I'm puzzled because I have NEVER flown this aircraft in the entire time I've had FSX. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?  Thanks.

when you flew it, did you have the throttle wide open, balls to the wall?? if you did, you probably over torqued the engine and blew the rods out of it. Try it again but this time, only go 1/2 to maybe 3/4 throttle, and watch your gauges. Keep 'em in the green.

I have the same problem with Jordan Moore's Bell 430 with 412 upgrade. You CAN NOT fly it wide open. You will over torque the engine or the rotor and you will kill the bird. You can only fly it at 1/2 to 3/4 collective. (throttle is already wide open)

Also, when you have the throttle past 3/4 flip on the anti-detonation switch:

It's behind the stick so it's hard to see :)

A bit of context explanations here :)

The Mustang Racer is the only default plane in FSX that uses the engine damage feature of FSX Acceleration. Engine damage will occur if you push the engine power too far without activating the ADI, the anti-detonation injection system.

If you want to prevent your engine from exploding, always keep an eye on your manifold pressure gauge. Keep it in the green zone. If you want to go close to the red zone, don't do it without activating the ADI first. And don't go in the red. Ever.

The engine damage can be added to other aircrafts as well. It's just a line to add in the aircraft.cfg of the aircraft, in the [piston engine] section:
detonation_onset = xx
xx is the manifold pressure that should not be exceeded without ADI. On the Mustang, this is set to 80.
Of course, this feature will only work for the owners of FSX Acceleration.

If you fly the air racing tutorial mission it will explain things for you a bit better.

With the power of the engine without ADI you will blow the engine clean out. Now you can exceed the red line and, move the Manifold Pressure up to the second green arc just make sure ADI is engaged. Plus know that ADI is limited it will run out when it does you must bring MP back down to normal operation limits. Takeoff can be achieved quite effortlessly with less than half throttle make sure you have prop. control too. This will better help you keep your engine happy. The mustang is a beautiful bird but takes some respect in order to tame her.

Happy Flights

lmao!!!! i do not even have this craft, let alone the ability to even FSX and I can not believe that i hit the problem on head by guessing.

I was 70% joking about blowing the engine and going full throttle wide open, and here it that I was right!!! lol

next time you fly, turn on your ADI and stay off the gas pedal.

Thank you. all. Yes. I had the throttle at max and  blew the engine. I initially thought there might be a rogue Waffen SS AA battery hidden somewhere in the shrubbery outside my home airport in Santa Barbara.  Thanks again for the explanation.

what he gave you was just a warning... slow it down next time and you will get to your destination with your engine in 1 piece. lol

You're welcome.
I think I have created a topic about that somewhere in the past. I has(stupid lolcats) have included that feature on two FS9 planes: the Corsair and the Howard 500 by Milton Shuppe, with some screenshots of burning engines :)
