windows 7 64bit anybody?

Postby eurowing » Fri May 15, 2009 10:35 pm

hi,
i just installed the RC of windows 7 64 bit and everything seems to work just fine (FSX). i can not however use the scroll wheel on my mouse to change i.g. heading or altitude on the mode control panel of either the pmdg or level d airplanes. i have to click the button on the mouse.

does anybody else have the same problem or possibly a workaround?

thanks!

FWIW - I had the same problem after I had Win7 64 Beta intalled for a while. The mouse wheel worked fine at first, but then at some point it stopped working. I thought it was due to a tweak gone wrong or something like that, and I was never able to figure it out.
Since then I have re-formatted to install Win7 64 RC and the mouse wheel is working as advertised again.
Sorry I can't be of any help.

are you saying that you can use the mouse wheel on your mcp? if so, what kind of mouse are you using? usb? which one? logitech?

i have even tried hooking up another mouse as well as reinstalling it, for some reason win7 will not even recognize my ps/2 mouse.

having this information i think would be quite helpful indeed.

thanks!

Yes, the mouse wheel works fine for rotating dials on MCP.
I use a Logitech USB mouse with the native Windows drivers.

ok, so now i know that it is not a win7 problem per se. i also have a logitech mouse. now i will have to figure out how to get it to work without reinstalling windows...

thank you, Dave!

Denis,

I just remembered something that may be worth mentioning from when I was having this issue - While using the VC in the Flight1 Mustang, when I brought up the 2D pop-up of the autopilot panel, there were locations on that panel where some of the mouse wheel functions would work, even though the spots were nowhere near where they should be. By chance I noticed the the wheel would work for one of the functions (I don't recall which one now) when rotating the wheel over a blank area of the autopilot background, nowhere near the intended knob.

hi Dave,

i am happy to report that i did find the solution tonight!

my monitor is a 20" screen that runs a native 1600x1200 resolution. the text gets really small so i have to increase the text size under windows display settings to reduce strain on my eyes. when i installed win7 i went straight to 150% which is nice and big. that turned out to be my problem, though. reducing that to 125% did the trick and i can now change the dials on the MCP again.

how did i discover this? i just did a new installation on a spare HDD and only set it to 125% to begin with (i tried to keep settings on this installation different, i even stayed away fromt the nvidia gpu drivers), then went from there and at some point the light went on somewhere in my head and when i blew it up to 150% i had the same problem on the new installation, too. so i went back to my regular installation, reduced the text size to 125% and everything is fine.

now i can enjoy flying again because this was really bugging me. and i can install the rest of my add ons. i kinda put those on hold because i did not know if i have to reinstall it all again.

thank you for your help! i am enjoying win7 very much so far and i hope you are, too. i haven't even tweaked a thing and performance is great, although it seems that textures are not as crisp, but i will have to install nhancer and hopefully that will help.

regards,
Denis

Should I go for Win 7 64bit or 32bit... has 64bit got any problems like previous 64bit versions of OS's have had before?

I would recommend the 64 bit if you have the hardware to run it. Amongst other things, it will properly utilize larger amounts of RAM. (greater than 3GB). This is my first time with a 64 bit OS so I'm not familiar with past problems, but I must say that I have not had any issues so far - just make sure that you get all of the latest and greatest 64 bit drivers from your hardware manufacturers - I think lack of decent drivers was one of the main issues facing 64 bit OS's earlier on...
Originally I was dual booting Win7 64 beta and XP (32 bit) and found that I was getting smoother performance in FSX with Win7, with frames being about the same. In addition, I have had no problems with stability and all of my addons work without any problems.
Since the RC was released I've gone with Win7 all the way without any regrets.

Good Luck,
