Denali Base Mission

Postby TRflyman01 » Thu Sep 25, 2008 12:45 am

Hi, I flew the Denali base mission last night for the first time. Still have a lot of missions that I have not flown. Anyway, I was just wondering about climbing to high alttitudes with a short distance to your destination as in the second part of the mission, climbing to 15000 ft in the maule. Took me a while to get there. In real world or simming is it better to fly away from your destination at one heading for half of the altitude that you need to achieve and then turning back so you can fly in a straight line or is it just the same to fly a large circle while gaining the altitude that you need. Seems like I had to nurse it quite alot to get to that fl. Not really important just curious.
Thoroughly enjoyed the mission, almost slid off of the mountain when I landed, lol.
Thanks,

I think it's better to fly away in straight line than making a circle. When you turn, since you wings are no more horizontal, the efficiency is reduced, so it's harder to gain altitude or maintain your speed.

I had the same problem last week when I was flying the Hind out of an high altitude airport called Leh. I wanted to cross the moutains to reach a nearby airport, but the Hind would hardly gain any altitude (I even had to takeoff like a plane !). I could only gain altitude by flying straight. Each turn was immediately causing a loss of altitude, or level flight, in best cases, when I was very lucky :)

I loved this Denali mission, by the way. The scenery there is really nice, and you need a good control of your plane and engine to reach the camp... I'm still thinking about the people that cried two years ago saying that missions would turn FSX into a game for consoles

I don't know where exactly this mission takes place (since I don't have Acceleration), but not long ago I flew in the Andes with a C172 and had to cross some very high peaks - tried it with said method (straight, 180

I don't think it's an Acceleration mission. The plane is the Maule, so it may be just part of FSX Deluxe...
PS: but now that you mention it, it might be fun to test this mission again in the Merlin :D

Ah, ok - I thought of some kind of light plane or glider to use thermals or upwinds, but why not in a helo?!  ;D

But do report if it works!  ;)

What was your flaps setting?
The Maule has a -7 flaps setting.
This is to give it a little more speed by reducing the cord angle.
One of the few aircraft that has this.  I believe it is there do adjust for the rest of the design as a STOL aircraft.

Yeah, but you sacrifice a lot of lift, so it's a bad idea when climbing,
