Naive question, but where do I find the WideAspect... cfg instruction.  Although in fact matrox runs each of the three screens at 1024x it probably wouldn't be of use.  Noticed a slightly scary comment in Phil Taylor's latest blog - that the SP might be later than the end of the month depending on the results of the beta testing.

If so, Nick, if you have time could you run a set of numbers for me.  I'd love to give them a try.

Well, PTalylor did say that the faster speeds will display this problem.

He considers 250 KIAS (standard velocity for jets below FL100) as fast?? :o

On one thought, what zoom levels are you using.

Interior 0.60, exterior 1.0.

I do know that because the sim changes the perception in wide screen to reveal more screen the frame rate naturally drops, just like if you zoom back. Perhaps a combination of wide screen and zoom are playing into this too?

Sounds good.

Anyways, I'm gonna keep on testing. Maybe a 1000/500 load factor on autogen will do better than 1200/600.

Nick:  I have a computer professional who can help me with the BIOS work, and I know that the CPU has an overclocking utility on the disk that came with it.  I also have a laptop independently connected to the web by Next G so we could sit with that while we changed the other.  It will be a few days before I can however as I am a 1000kms from my gaming machine at the moment.  I followed the link for the other settings, but I was a little unsure as to which post on the page you meant - is it the lengthy one from Miltestpilot that you mean?  Many thanks for taking the time.

The only variation of importance is the screen resolution, as I run using the matrox three screen splitter box (not an internal card} which gives a total of 3072 pixels across the screens. It will be interesting actually finding the cfg as at the moment I have only been able to get to it through the search function.  I know its address but actually finding the file physically through my computer has so far defeated me.

Okaay, here's my final settings:

TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=326 (<- Final)
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=20 (<- Final)
WideViewAspect=True (<- Necessary, reduces blurries)

FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.47 (<- Okay)

AUTOGEN_DENSITY=4 (<- Makes Europe look better ;))
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2400 (<- = 960)
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1200 (<- = 480)

PoolSize=5000000

VSync = On
Performance = High Quality
Trilinear Optimization = Off
Aniso Sample = Off

= Compromise. Neither 100% smooth, nor 100% image quality. But waaay better than before.

But it will do 'till SP1, I hope. Now off with the road traffic and back to my custom AI. :)

Thanks again for everything, Nick.

Btw: If you need another beta tester for your strobe effects and light mods, PM me. ;)

I am glad you seem to have resolve most of your issues. From the sound of your post what you have now is much superior to what you were running in the past.

As you can see, reducing the numbers and raising the slider can sometimes have a better visual look and work for the system too. I know Miltest likes his with lower numbers and higher slider but he is not running a 640mb video card with a 1200MHz shader engine.

Interesting final numbers too. Black was 900/450 with a .45 and you are 960/480 with a .47, the major difference between the two is you

You are very welcome Bjorn.

I hope what you have now is far greater than what you started with. If so, that is all I need to hear in thanks for any assistance I may have provided. You took the initiative and learned from what what posted about clocking and setting up. All I did was provide (in the wrong hands) some very dangerous but solid technical information. The bottom line is you worked it out, not me

Oh yeah! Better look and smooooth!

Well, but getting and sorting out the info is a trick having to be learned as well. ;)

SP1 may change all that and you might have to get acquainted with it again so do not assume anything after that update has been installed and you are properly defragged.

And even if I had to start over, if I can keep my current performance and increse the visual detail, I'll be totally content.

As for the lights, I am just about finished with them and when I make a few other small changes I will send you the file.

Yay! Thanks in advance. :)

Nick:  Sorry for a third post almost in a line, but can you suggest a make of RAM that you recommend. Kingston was installed without me getting an option, but by a local computer shop which is very trustworthy.
Let me also repeat the gratitude that others have shown.  You, Miltestpilot and others have taken me to the details of computing in a way that is thoughtful and with great results.  It is bizarre that an over-specified programme like FSX has forced us to do these things, but the learning process has ultimately been highly beneficial.  I only wish that the lessons had been less expensive!

G.E.I.L. and Corsair?

Yeah, they were expensive in time, but in money? Nah. The more you have, the more you get - even in FSX.
