SYSTEM PROPERTIES - ADVANCED TAB - STARTUP AND RECOVERY BUTTON

Take the check out of: AUTOMATICALLY RESTART

and in the drop-down below that, select SMALL MEMORY DUMP

Click OK

You may get a warning message, just select YES then APPLY (if its not grayed out) and close the system properties

From now on if the system crashes you will get a blue screen with an error message instead of it restarting by itself.

If you do get a blue screen, write down the error message (not all the text) An example would be:

PAGE FAULT,  IRQ LESS THAN EQUAL at address x0008...

It may list a file name in the error

I dont need the numbers just the initial error message

IF you boot and run FSX the system crashes during a short flight, we will relax the timing on the memory a bit and that should bring us to a stop for the night

If a crash occurs, set the following in the BIOS:

Enter the BIOS and change:

MEMORY TIMINGS: MANUAL

T (CAS): 5
T (RCD): 5
T (RP) : 5
T (RAS) 15
T(RC): 19

ADDRESSING MODE: 2 Clocks

That should be stable and if it is, we will go from there with FSB settings another time.

and one last thing... dont expect miracles with FSX this time around. What we have done is located the correct timings and got the memory working in 1:1 relationship with the CPU at the right frequency. You are actually running just a touch under the GHz you were before but now the memory is chatting with the bus correctly.

There is more to come.

Ok I'm back at 1233/616 & 4 4 4 12 15. I've also bumped the Vcore to 1.425 running @ 1.37

What about video card settings?

Lets leave them alone for tonight and for now. The CPU and memory come first

I am sorry this is taking a while but it must be done slowly and carefully.

Boot FSX and fly the 747. See if you notice changes in how it flys. Feel free to change views, pan, etc

If it crashes, set just the memory timing as I displayed above in the BIOS and try it again

If it is stable, we are ready for another round. If not, then there is something wrong, possible in the power supply not putting out enough juice.. lets take it one step at a time

I forgot about Asus Probe abd Ntune... make sure those programs are closed and not in the tray before flying... I may have missed you

Wow....just wow...

Before I was getting 8 - 9 FPS on takeoff, now I'm getting 12.

Also my stutters are gone while panning around in spot view now.

OK now you see, its not about GHz its about getting the memory bus to talk to the CPU

Continue to fly and see if the system crashes

If it does, set the memory as I showed above... but drop the memory voltage to 1.9v instead of 2.0. If it crashes, raise the voltage back to 2.0

Next we will start working the memory timings by raising them and try to get you up to 333.5 (DDR667) on the memory, 1333 on the FSB and then we will tweak the memory timing until the system becomes unstable... at that point we will have you're sweet-spot located and its just a matter of trial and error.

After that is complete we will then re-trim the sim settings. Please do not change them right now

Last will be the video card

I do want you to do one thing though... if after you fly there are no crashes in the system, please go back into the BIOS and reduce the DRAM VOLTAGE to 1.9v

Fly again and see if its stable. If it is, leave it at 1.9v

I have not touched the sim sliders other than air traffic earlier this afternoon with miltest's suggestions: GA 20, Jets 30.

I've done my share of over-clocking but this was a lot of fun. I've also learned a lot about this sim & how resource dependent it is. I have not touched my video settings yet and I will wait for your go on that.

So far no crashes. I have the sim paused as I'm typing this. I will continue flying for another 10 mins or so before I hit the sack.

Thank you for spending your Sunday on me today. Same goes to you Mil. (where's that damn thumbs up icon?...) lol

No problem... we are just getting warmed up now

I do not know how far we can go but I will be more than happy to continue to walk you through the art of over-clocking.

It takes patience and is difficult to do remotely but you are getting the gist now about how things work and thats what counts.

Please drop the memory voltage to 1.9v tonight, even if you do not fly a test flight. 2.0 is the max although 2.1 can be pushed and I would prefer that stay as low as possible and still run stable.

Tomarrow fly again on 1.9v and see if its stable and if so, we will go from there

I will do that now right after I log. I'll let you know how stable it is tomorrow night when I get home from work.

Take care and thanks again.
