What card do you have?

ATI AIW X800XT PRO 256mb

EDIT: The AGP version, not the PCI-E

from what I understand users of older ATI cards especially the ATI 9800pro are getting excellent results

1. Are you using the official 5.9 or later CCC AND drivers?

2. Is the card AGP or PCI-E?

3. Is there also a "HIGH QUALITY AF" checkbox in the AF setting that is grayed out?

Hmmmmm... if the high quality AF setting became functionally available after you applied the reg settings and a non-functional Adaptive A-A setting appeared, it would seem that there is either an issue with the PCI-E version or the x700 does not support Ad-AA at all.

I wish I could help further however without a PCI-E card to test I would not know where to begin.

I assume the DX Override method I posted did not work for you?

All dx9 ATI cards support AD-AA.  If the option is greyed out do this:

Start>Run>"regedit"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Control>Video

There will be a number of folders in there.  Open the first folder and click the 0000 folder.

Look down the list on the right for Catalyst version.  Check it is your version.  If not keep going down the folders on the left looking at each 0000 folder until you find it.

There may be two folders containing 0000 folders for your version, so check, because you will need to add the next bits to both of them.

Look for ASTT_NA on the right list.  Change this from 1 to 0.

Right click on the white space on the right; New>String Value.  Call it ASTT, set it to 1.

Restart the comp, go to Catalyst Control Centre and it will be available and you can set it to quality or performance.

You need to check each of the 0000 folders and look at the Catalyst driver version:

Adaptive AA

First of all, thanks for giving me your settings and the FS9.CFG stuff.  With a little tweaking (to compensate for my lesser card) I now have FS running smoother and looking better.  I didnt try the DX overrride yet because frankly, I havent had the time, but I do plan on trying it when I do.  I just changed the registry to make Adaptive AA availiable, about to restart the PC to see if I did it right.

Thanks for all your help!

There are ATI cards, other than the latest releases, that will provide full support Adaptive AA however not all of them do and mine is one of them. My card will enable A-AA but the card is missing some of the circuits and components required for full, stable support. I also found a significant frame rate hit (8-10 frames) when allot of autogen foliage was displayed, such as in Alaska and other wilderness areas.

I noticed very little hit in frames-rates with AD-AA over conventional FSAA, or TAA.  I don't think AD-AA benefits fs2004 too much, but it will make trees look sharper close-up.  AD-AA works on textures that have transparent parts.

...this thread, which started off as a simple edit job that anyone could do seems to me to have grown into a monster which I for one, lost track a few posts back.. It is now a very complicated and drawn out affair..........merely to get trees to stop shimmering.................no offence Nick but think I'll just forget the whole thing........ thanks for trying but it's got way over my head now so I'll just leave it.....commoner ;)

if you go to http://www.ngohq.com/index.php? they have a set of Optimised drivers available for both ATI and Nvidia Video cards. i am using them on my Nvidia card and it has made an inprovement with the graphics on my computer and it stops the shimmering too.
