Just to be fair:
There are lots of people just getting into this hobby, so some ignorance can be expected, or even worse, just by reading soe of the responses in this very thread, some will even refrain from asking thus gettin more damage.

;D

I love it when we get this sort of thread.

Hey - nobody has got upset yet as far as I can see so no need for the ole finger wagging to stop people using the words they want to.

It's because we have threads like this with a bit of passion and steam being generated (OK, and some hot air as well  :) )that the very people who need protection (ie NewBs and novices) read em and realise that there are some things that you just do not do.

IMHO it's far better to read tough comments from people who know and have maybe got their fingers burnt from experience in the early days than to go out and learn by making the same (often very painful) mistakes all over again themselves.

So let's make a noise when designers or anyone else do things we don't approve of. And let's also encourage people to read a few old posts as well when they first come onto the forums. No harm in it and there's a massive wealth of experience and knowledge stashed away in here if only people want to take a little bit of trouble to look.

There I go again... ::)

[quote] ???

From the ReadMe:

Automatic Installation:
--------------------
1) Make a copy of the dlgsplash.bmp file located in the Uires folder.
2) Clic on the HBYCT_V1_Install.exe file.

Automatic Uninstallation:
--------------------
1) Clic on the uninstall Menu.
2) Replace the original dlgsplash.bmp file under the Uires folder.

Now c'mon - don't be a grump

Ah

Now can see why you're a bit miffed Joe. I would be as well I guess.

Let's hope any budding designers who are thinking about doing smart-arse things with our PC setups see this thread and have second thoughts.

The SimV backlash is something to be [glb]FEARED[/glb] ain't it  ;)

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, "Auto-installers are like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you are gonna get." ;D

Sometimes there is no plane folder and all the sub-folders go straight into the main FS200X folders. Now that's a real joy to sort out. >:(

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put a new plane, scenery, gauge, or anything from a zipped file directly into the main system. One of the real naughty things that can happen is a newer gauge will be installed over one of the FS default ones and suddenly MS doesn't recognize it any more forcing you to reload from the CD. Lost the cessna182s.gau that way once. Do you know how many add-ons use that gauge set? ::)

Regarding the splash screen, I vary the splash screen on every startup. Much more interesting that way. 8) I use the free randomizer from Dream Fleet.

Its reasons like this I tend to like my sim filled with 90% payware, because I know what I am getting. Each payware has a detailed how to and what it will do that I can read befiore installation.

But I dont think calling people 'stupid' because they install a freeware aircraft that changes the spash screen is fair. There are a lot of computer/simulation novices that learn by trial and error. I know I was like that when I started in the sim world

Some of you are missing the point .
Of course a manuel install is always preferable.
Some suggest this as if it`s a profound,
esoteric revelation. ;)

The reall issue here is a pratice of overwriting files in the process of installing some sort of ad in "freeware".
Anyone care to comment about that?

Oh yeah, my first flight sim was "IFR" on the C-64 way back in........

I`m hardly a "computer novice" :)

Sure why not.... ;D  I think we stated that it was stupid for people to create executible files, that do not work properly, add items that the user does not want, not be clear about what is being installed, or overwrite files that we do not overwritten.  "Stupid" being refered to the person or executible file that is not conscious of the fact that people may appreciate the work that has been done, but might want to keep some to their settings unaltered. (stupid was not my word of choice).

Finally I think we have stated that the practice of overwritting files and replacing files with ads, because we chose to download and install a freeware addon is a no, no... ;D  How did I do at the recap? ;D  Topic over?  Next...... ;D

Well put and well summarised codered.

I think we've about beaten this one to death. No need for anyone to be upset or offended as far as I can see.

Great contributions from everyone and about time to move on I think - I certainly am.
