Hi all... ;D...!

I've got both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer on my desktop.

I use IE to browse SimV, and post in the Forum, for the reason that I find Firefox has a rather strange text editor, in that the cursor appears directly over the characters, masking them, (rather than in front of the character, as in a normal text editor), also any smilies must be inserted during the process of typing the text.
They cannot be inserted after the text has been completed, (they only appear at the end of the text.

Internet Explorer uses an excellent text editor where additions and deletions can be performed anywhere in the text..!

Firefox is superb for logging onto sites where IE displays the annoying message...>>>

----------------------------------------
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
...etc...etc...
----------------------------------------

Does anyone know why Internet Explorer does this...?
Someone mentioned that it is due to the use of "Active X" controls by IE.
...so what is "Active X", and can IE be modified to overcome the problem...?

Many thanks... 8)...!

Cheers all... ;D...!

Paul....Weather's getting colder. Winter's on it's way... :'(...!

P.S.   I still find that Firefox is MUCH slower to download pages than Internet Explorer....(56k modem)... ::)...!

It is because IE attempts once to connect to the site, if it fails that is it, Firefox will continue to try again and again and again... for about 20 times, if it fails after that you get the message that the page does not exist.  It does the retry attempts really quickly so you don't notice it.

Here ya go Fozz, this will explain it a lot better than if I tried to, even though I understand what it is and does for me to explain would be a nightmare ;D
By the way Active X is also one of  the easiest way for a virus to get you!

To speed up page downloading you can try a internet accelerator, which will basically reduce the quaility of images as they appear, I think you can actually do this within your browser, the less quaility will equal a faster download.
I use a accelerator and have it set to reduce quaility of images, the advantage of a accelerator is that it kills the annoying advertisments found on most website such as the ones that hang above our forums here and many others and you can turn it on or off with a click of your mouse for when you want to see the images in full quaility.

Hi Jeff...!
Many thanks for the link describing "Active X Controls"... ;D...!

http://www.active-x.com/articles/whatis.htm

A fascinating bit of info...!
I read it from beginning to end...
Then read it from the end, back to the beginning...
Then I turned the monitor on it's side and read it sideways...

I then came to the conclusion that it sounds very much like the confusing waffle that our politicians, (and yours?), bend our ears with, in the hope of getting re-elected again for another four years...
And......
I still cant figure what benefits there are of having Active X in my Internet Explorer...
...giving me problems, similar to the waffling politicians, hoping for my vote... ::)...!

LOL...LOL...LOL..!

Cheers Jeff.... 8)...!
Thanks again... ;)..!

Just a tip for all of my fellow Mozzers, do NOT try to delete IE after you install FF...here's why.

Windows Update can ONLY be run on a computer with IE installed.  It's MS's little way of making sure you always depend on them. ;)
Great edit, Bob.

Google it.

Very good point!!
I did that after installing Netscape, then realized that almost all M$ related downloads couldn't be performed. As well there are still many websites that cannot be viewed on anything but IE (their loss!) ;)

Windows update (automatic) - who in the world needs that?  ::)

If I need a fix for my XP,I d/l it manually from MS.

Geeeez...!
It's so flippin' annoying...!
I have to have two versions of the Web Browser on my desktop...!

One: Outlook Express. For 75% of the time when it recognises the site I log-on to...!

Two: Mozilla Firefox. For the remaining 25% of the time when Outlook Express refuses to recognise the site I log-on to...!

Why do I have such problems with Outlook Express...??
...and is there  a way I can cure it...?

Cheers all...!

Paul.

Note: Mozilla does have certain disadvantages regarding editing..... ;)...!
