Need some help with my Graphics Card

Postby Sovien » Sat Sep 29, 2007 2:28 pm

I just installed an nvidia 8800 GTS. I got the driver installed, and installed the latest update from nvidia.

Now the problem: When I start up FS9, when the main menu loads and shows your "default" aircraft it looks like an anti-aliasing nightmare. Jaggies galour!

I've gone into the nvidia control panel and made sure all my antialiasing settings are maxed. I've also made sure the driver overrides FS9's settings (I dont even have antialiasing enabled in FS9).

I tried enabling antialiasing within FS9, still kept the video card's antialiasing setting maxed, and set the driver to "enhance the application" settings rather then overriding them.

Nothing seems to be improving my graphics quality. The Jaggies, they haunt me!

I'm at a complete lose as to what to do, I'm really kind of confused that even with antialiasing set at x16 there's jaggies like I dont have it turned on.

Any help those of you who use nvidia cards (especially those with the 8800) would be immensily appreciated.

Thanks for the link. I tried deleting the profiles as suggested in that thread, but whenever I select MS Flight Simulator 2004 it wont let me remove them (the remove button is greyed out)????  How do you remove the profiles?

Also, downloaded the nhancer as suggested. Installed. Went to boot it up, and got an error message says "Error reading XML file 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapps.xml': There is an error in XML document (982,530.

I removed the program, redownloaded, reinstalled. Got the same error again. Suggestions?

Seems my problems are increasing.

Thanks again.

make sure you have MS .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Its download is listed at the bottom of the page in the link above

without net 2.0 nhancer wont work

come to think of it, I read somewhere that error has something to do with the newer Nvidia drivers.

Nvidia does not like nhancer and they have been doing things to try and muck up the program in driver changes so you cant get full control back

I read someone made a replacement xml file that fixes this in the newer drivers but I cant vouch for it or know if it wont cause other problems.

see this post http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpos ... stcount=40

which has a zip file with the edited XML you are getting the error about. Back up the orginal, unzip the downloaded one and put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and see if that gets things working.

put the backup file some where safe so you can use it to overwrite then new one if something goes wrong

I also read a few people just removed the entire nvapps.xml file from C:\WINDOWS\system32 and Nhancer works fine. I would try that first, just move it out of the system32 directory and see what happens before puting that other in there.

I see. Ive already installed their lastest driver. I'll get rid of the new driver and reinstall with the CD that came with the card instead.

On another note, I found this rather interesting:

As said before I've been attempting to get FS9 looking as good (hopefully better) then it did with my old Radeon X1650 Pro. I just loaded up FSX to see it looked like with the new 8800 GTS.

Remember the horrible jaggies I said I was seeing (with antialiasing up to 16x)? There are absolutely no jaggies in FSX.

I'm gonna try and decrease the antialiasing in FS9 and see what happens. I'm utterly amazed that FS9 isn't looking good with AA on 16x, but FSX does.  :o

I have not installed the latest (163.77) I have 163.44 installed and they work fine but I also run XP x64

I may try the new ones and if that happens here I will try the different fixes

it sounds to me like a nvidia profile is overriding FS9, or, you did not delete the FS9.cfg file and start clean with the card and driver update. Here is a list to go through, delete the fs9.cfg file and follow this list carefully: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 729872/2#2

Thanks for your help Mil. I deleted the nvapps.xml as suggested. nHancer worked great after that. I created a profile for FS9 through nHancer and got the settings all squared away. I booted up FS9 and much to my pleasure the jaggies were gone, and it appears the card is working correctly. Oddly though, whenever the main menu of FS9 loaded, where the "default" aircraft is displayed now all I see is a solid black box.

I loaded up a flight to see what would happen. All terrain, weather, airplane, etc loaded fine and looks great. Only problem now is, whenever I select a plane I can't see the livery at the selection screen, or at the main menu :D

Think it's caused because I deleted that xml file?

Here's a pic of what I'm seeing:

John is correct about the nhancer issue. It seems he has been reading my 'heads up" emails after all

just as a note for reference:
I had to unload the latest NVIDIA drivers (163.67) for my 8800GTS 640 MB card and
reload 162.18  in order to use RivaTuner. With the newer drivers only the "Fan Speed"
was controlable under the "Performance" tab in the Control Panel. The ability to over-clock
was disabled!  RivaTuner would not even open with the 163.67 drivers installed.

My system is running VERY well with the older drivers and the 8800 is overclocked to 30%
when I run FSX. I have profiles of 15% over-clock and default speed set in RivaTuner so
I can "unload" the card when just browsing. I also have 3 different fan profiles set up.
