New AMD and Nvidia cards and PCIe 2

Postby HugoCampos » Fri Aug 03, 2007 11:41 am

The new Nvidia and AMD graphics cards will use the new PCIe 2. Will they also support the current PCIe or will everyone need to get a new motherboard like the X38 in order to install one of these babies in their system when they're released?

Backwards compatible

They would not put cards on the market that removed more than 3/4 of their sales

Lets be honest the majority of new games are pretty crap no matter what card you have. Seems to me the emphasis for games is graphics and not gameplay.
eg.
Oblivion=total zzzzzzzzzz walk around, crappy fighting, piontless missions.
Stalker =total zzzzzzzzzz walk around some photoreal grapics and do F-all.
I will imagine we shall all get bored of Crysis after a couple of weeks. I dont find FSX any more enjoyable than FS2004. I just wish they would hold back on graphics cards because they are all really taking the piss!! and were bloody suckers for it.
Sorry but do we need more cards just yet?? I dont think so.
People are saying "whats next from the 8800??" JESUS CHRIST!!

The problem with modern video cards is they are being developed faster than the motherboard technolgy and many modern games need that updated support as well.

The end of this year/beginning of next will dawn a new age for video and game technology. With the motherboards finally catching up to the video cards, what you have seen in the video card PR's will take a huge leap, like it did when the 9800 pro was released but much, much higher. Given the video core will now be in direct communication with each CPU core, and will also be able to do CPU calculation on the GPU at the same time, what you understand as video technology is about to completely change.

With that, titles like FSX which were designed for that innovation (they do get the inside scoop on what is coming and develop for it) will then start to see the hardware they were created to be run on.

FSX has 10 times the code being sent to the system for processing. With the new supporting motherboard systems and video cores, we will start to see more than 20-30% that code getting processed as it is today.

The bad thing about all this is that the new hardware cost more and more every new generation due to the lack of adequate competition in the market. I wouldn't be surprised if the new graphics cards cost over 1 grand. And It wouldn't be surprising to see motherboards being sold for 500 bucks or so either. Now who can spend several 1k on hardware so they can play the new games? Not many! I still remember the time when the most expensive graphics card cost 500 EUR. Now the 8800 Ultra costs about 800 EUR.
I also think games should start being developed for people with mid-high range systems. That way more people would be able to play them. Right now games are made for computers that don't even exist yet? FSX is so demanding that not even someone who spent thousands on a system can play it at it's max. I even think that not many will be able to max FSX by the time FSXI comes out. That's just ridiculous!
Oh, and I had an idea! Let's just develop a photo realistic game with ray tracing, caustics and all that stuff. Everyone will be able to play it in 5 years! How cool is that?!? We're gonna sell a lot!!! NOT!!!!!!!!!

FS has always been developed for future hardware.  FS ACOF, FS2K.  All of them.  It's always been like this.  In reality, it doesn't matter.  Flying a plane doesn't change, so you can fly the sim and upgrade your hardware later.  It has always been this way.

Games, on the other hand, have a lifespan.  By the time hardware is readily accessible to run, say, Supreme Commander at the highest settings with 7 AI enemies, the gameplay will have become stagnant.
The Devil's Advocate.

Right, you know on the flip side if you buy a computer thats worth 3k and go play Doom3, no matter how good your computer is doom3 wont look any better. The game was only goded for x amount of graphics. A fast computer wont make X any better. So your 3k PC is kind of not worth the investment. Now if I buy a 3k pc and the game will offer up graphics all the up to killing my pc then my pc is not wasted money because it is beeing used. They could have underdevolped the game so it hardly looked any better than fs9 so everyone could feel good about themselves because they can max it but then whats the point in new tech.
