Well I guess I should clarifly some things...

I'm buying a new computer now because the one I have is slowly dying...I think the motherboard is going out as it has problems starting up, I've had to reinstall the drivers for the onboard sound twice this week and my onboard NIC died making me have to install a new ethernet card a couple months back.   I'm US Navy and getting ready to deploy this summer so I want a new computer so my wife doesn't have to put up with having to deal with a posible dead system while I'm gone.  So waiting too long isn't really an option...

Plus it's a AGP system and I want PCIe....I'm running a 256MB Nvidia 7800 GS OC right now.

My budget is about 2 grand for this new system by the way...

$2K? Dude I could go through the roof on this one.

ASUS P5N 32-E SLi
Core 2 Duo E6600
Corsair XMS DDR2-800 (PC2-6400C4) 2GB
150GB WD Raptor
320GB WD SATA3
2x eVGA GeForce 7950GTs
ThermalTake Soprano DX case
Samgsung DVD Burner
Windows XP Home Edition + Vista upgrade ticket OEM
Earnmax 850W PSU

That should come out to be about $1890 (price retrieved from newegg.com)

But, yea, if I had $2K to spend on a system that is what I would be looking at.

Cheers

ASUS P5N 32-E SLi

ASUS P5WDH Deluxe

Core 2 Duo E6600

Core2Extreme 6800

Corsair XMS DDR2-800 (PC2-6400C4) 2GB

++

150GB WD Raptor
320GB WD SATA3

I'd dump the 150GB one.

2x eVGA GeForce 7950GTs

GF 8800GTX.

ThermalTake Soprano DX case

A+ Qubiq.

Samsung DVD Burner

++

Windows XP Home Edition + Vista upgrade ticket OEM

I guess he already has XP...

Earnmax 850W PSU

Anything above 600W that can deliver 24Amps and more on the +12V rail.

I don't know the prices in the US, but a wild estimate would be 1700

Too bad about not being able to wait.

If it were me and I was not going to be using it for games (I dont kow if the wife will use it for that) I would get a cheap PCIe card just to have the system available for the wife until I return and then I will have wonderful options to spend a chunk of cash on a good DX10 for my use. That is assuming the wife does not need high end 3D support.

As for the PSU... 24 watts on 12V is a joke. If you are going to upgrade for the future the PSU is the KEY and the CENTER of the entire system

This would be the LOWEST I would go to be ready for the next gen video cards needing 200-300watts of power ALONE

http://www.pcpower.com/products/viewpro ... show=S75QB

This is especially true with upgrade to Vista and 3-4 gigs of high performance memory for FSX/Vista use

Thats for a SINGLE next gen video card - or - Dual video card from what is available TODAY, not in 3 months... and Dual core on a high performance system

For next gen Dual Card and Quad Core (the future) you WILL need this: http://www.pcpower.com/products/viewpro ... how=T1KWSR

anyone that tells you different is clueless

The first PSU I posted will also run a nex gen single card and quad core... it would hard pressed to run 2 nex gen video cards with that, but it might just squeeze by.. Personally, I would not push it that hard and go the 1KW unit.

If you already have XP you can upgrade to Vista. Once Vista is installed you reinstall Vista, this sopposidly leads to what is a full, clean install.  :D

Enermax? I'd get one of those single rail PC Power & cooling. My rig would probably be a few hundred dollars cheaper while being marginally slower.

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist.

...and hotter and less stable in high clocks and louder because the PSU would run stressed and all the other fans would be screaming because of lower available current

you get what you pay for

Most just do not understand the difference between a good PSU and the economy models. They are fine for typical use. If you want performance out of your components, you must put the right fuel in the tank.

You would not put 'standard' or regular fuel in high performance race car. You don't put a standard desinged PSU in a gaming tower that will be clocked or pushed.

It's a no brainer and it has the EXACT same affect as cheap gas in a race car!!

You meant Ampere, didn't you?

And 200$ for a PSU is simply sick.

Back to the original question.....

I currently have 2 7950 GX2s and although they are great boards, I would go with the 8800GTX or play the wait and see game and wait for the next round of GPUs to be released.
