Well I guess I should clarifly some things...

I'm buying a new computer now because the one I have is slowly dying...I think the motherboard is going out as it has problems starting up, I've had to reinstall the drivers for the onboard sound twice this week and my onboard NIC died making me have to install a new ethernet card a couple months back.   I'm US Navy and getting ready to deploy this summer so I want a new computer so my wife doesn't have to put up with having to deal with a posible dead system while I'm gone.  So waiting too long isn't really an option...

Plus it's a AGP system and I want PCIe....I'm running a 256MB Nvidia 7800 GS OC right now.

My budget is about 2 grand for this new system by the way...

Too bad about not being able to wait.

If it were me and I was not going to be using it for games (I dont kow if the wife will use it for that) I would get a cheap PCIe card just to have the system available for the wife until I return and then I will have wonderful options to spend a chunk of cash on a good DX10 for my use. That is assuming the wife does not need high end 3D support.


As for the PSU... 24 watts on 12V is a joke. If you are going to upgrade for the future the PSU is the KEY and the CENTER of the entire system

This would be the LOWEST I would go to be ready for the next gen video cards needing 200-300watts of power ALONE

This is especially true with upgrade to Vista and 3-4 gigs of high performance memory for FSX/Vista use

Thats for a SINGLE next gen video card - or - Dual video card from what is available TODAY, not in 3 months... and Dual core on a high performance system

The first PSU I posted will also run a nex gen single card and quad core... it would hard pressed to run 2 nex gen video cards with that, but it might just squeeze by.. Personally, I would not push it that hard and go the 1KW unit.

you get what you pay for

Most just do not understand the difference between a good PSU and the economy models. They are fine for typical use. If you want performance out of your components, you must put the right fuel in the tank.

You would not put 'standard' or regular fuel in high performance race car. You don't put a standard desinged PSU in a gaming tower that will be clocked or pushed.

It's a no brainer and it has the EXACT same affect as cheap gas in a race car!!

I currently have 2 7950 GX2s and although they are great boards, I would go with the 8800GTX or play the wait and see game and wait for the next round of GPUs to be released.
