How the Heck am I going to do this

Postby NDSP » Fri Feb 02, 2007 8:33 pm

I was thinking that if I was too make myself a wood yoke (Airliner Style based on the gournd) I would have to use my imagination when flying, because just looking at how to wire one into a system looks very complecated. Just looking at some of the demos online crushes all my hope.  So many wires and what not, I just cant figure out what the hell is going on in the picture, even reading the caption.

I still would need a new PC even if I did know how to wire one, so it might be a while, and I know this is getting annoying for me to keep asking, but I really dont want to test my luck with the CH Yoke again.

Nick  :-/

PS: Im really hoping Im not the first person to ever look at those pictures and not know what the heck is going on.

A CH yoke is pretty cool. If you cannot understand how complex it would be to build an airliner style yoke, you should stay with a CH yoke. As simple as the CH is, it does a great job.

i know its not too complicated, unless u really want to make the entire thing urself!!!

quite simply, find the cheapest, most bang-ed up old joystick which still works (preferably on ur operating system), and find the xy axis variable resistors.  keep the wiring (or extend it) and attach those varres to the various parts on whatever ur making.  (this is, of course, assuming that u can make the rest of the mechanical bits and pieces)

hope that helps.

btw, if u are going to doing everything ur self, look up a program called PPJoy.  Its a program which can help you configure a parralel port (printer port) joystick.  There are bound to be some tutorials on how to wire up the stuff.

hope that helps too. ;)

Well, I said test my luck because the CH Yoke blew out my USB Ports the last time, so i went to the Thrustmaster Top Gun thing. Now seeing how other people can use there yoke on the same system and not have a problem, I thought maybe I could just make my own Yoke and Throttle.

I unscrewed all of the hidden screws in the CH Yoke and found the Axis X & Y. I also found how the pitch worked. There were fewer wires then I expected, but I still dont fully understand which wire is which and how it is connected to the chip and stuff like that. I was wondering though how i could set up the X Axis and Y Axis if its Airliner Style :-? ? If it's too completcated then Ill stick with the regualar cessna or beechcraft style but if its not I wanna try it  :D

I also was able to see how the throttle worked on the top. It was definatly a good idea to open it  :)

Nick   ::)

PS: I really think that the people at CH Products didnt want me to open up there yoke because they had screws hidden everywhere, but i did  :D.

screws hidden everywhere arent anything special.  if anything, they do want u to open it up, so any warranty thing will dissappear rendering u money-back-less. :'(

x y axis are controlled by variable resistors rite? (knobs).  just extend the wires (keeping the same config) and place them accordingly.  easy easy.

well, airliner style is like this (sorry for really pore representation, but u should know wat it looks like ;)):

D    -(yoke bit) aileron (x axis)
|
|     -(bottom) elevator (y axis)

since the CH yoke is like a Cessna or Beechcraft etc. then the y axis (elevator) is probably a sliding var resistor.  an easy way to make the airliner style work similarly is to hav the slider fixed, while the back and forth movement slides the slider back and forth.

an alternative, is to replace the slider with the 'knob' equivalent.  goto any local hardware store (radio shack or sumthin like that) and ask if they hav any equivalents (showing them the slider).

also, build first, wire later - or wire as u go largely depends on how u build the thing.  if its going to be sort off messy and open, build then wire.  if its going to be very neat and proffesional looking, wire as u go, making sure u mark each wire or take note of wat they do (routing the wires well is the key, that and enough of the stuff ;D).

i know this stuff cuz my dad's an inventor and can make this stuff easily.  he teaches, i curiously watch, etc.

heres a better rep

btw, on the y axis, if u cant mount the slider high, then reverse the action and have the thing operate in a box, under the actual column.

hope that helps more ;)

pc sorry bout the whole thing moving funny (only had time to do it quickly)

no problem mun ;)

P.S. about the slider, it is prefered that u replace it with var resistors, its much easier to implement. 8-)

P.P.S. when its finished, i wanna see pics! ;D

P.P.P.S. those who like doing repeat things with 'P.S.' take note that the 'P' stands for 'post' meaning before, so u double/triple/whatever the Ps not the Ss.  Its not Post Script Script Script.

P.P.P.P.S. sorry to those who found this P.S. marathon meaningless and silly

P.P.P.P.P.S. just wanted to annoy you once more - lol ;D

Ill try to get pics,

Nick  8-)

PS: I just need to figure out how to attach the resistor and im ready

PPS: The wheel of the yoke is drying (had to glue a part or two..)

PPPS: Does Radio Shack sell resistors?

PPPPS: This is fun  :D

PPPPPS:  :D

PPPPPPS: Just one more....

PPPPPPPS: Thats all folks!  :D

PPPPPPPPS: Not........

lol,

But anyway last night I figured out how to attach a resistor (I stole it from my former yoke(such a theif)) so i just gotta attach it to my yoke and Im ready. It'l probably be done in about a week or two.
