watching HDtv on a computer

Postby omar777 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 8:10 pm

I have a tv tuner on my rig, and connected to that is a satilite reciever. The rig came with WinDVR3. it works nice.
Now my question, If I get a HDtv-tuner plus HD satilite, would have problems watching HD programs because of the monitor. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 191T 19".
My guess would be yes. But id like to get some opinions on that.
Thanks for reading!

It might be able to carry an HD signal through the DVI port, but it would be shown in SD. Even at that, the picture quality may be improved over a regular SD signal. I guess you could try an HD- DVD and see how it looks.
I don't think there's any such thing as an HD satellite. It's all down to the receiver or tuner as to what signal signal is sent to the monitor. OTA HD signals can be picked up from a good TV antenna with an HD tuner. My television is an old CRT/SD so the signal to the monitor would still be SD. I can pick up FTA HD signals through my dual C/Ku-band stallite, but they aren't watchable as my receiver has no HD tuner, only digital/analog.
All I see on an HD channel is a bunch of random colored pixels, kind of like watching on of those small dishes during a heavy storm.  ;D

An analog-input LCD won't properly reproduce an HD signal, but it should look somewhat better than an ordinary CATV signal. Might look better through the DVI port than the VGA port, might not.

Ultimately, though, as with an HD-ready display of any kind, there will only be an apparent improvement in quality if the broadcast itself is in HD (duh).
