Case fans

Ok... My question, How do you measure a case fan area? From side to side? or From corner to corner? I need to figure out what case fan will fit in my computer.

No its the circufrance of the fan that you measure, not the outside.

And its probibly an 80mm or 92mm.

lovely, I dont have a fan to test a measurment on, and I doubt I can measure the slot in the case. So I just buy a fan and keep returning one until it fits?

It can't be circumference, it has to be radius.  I just bought an 80mm fan and it has an 80mm radius, which would mean it would have a roughly 250mm circumfrence.  So, if you measure diagonally from screw-hole to screw-hole, you would have 160mm for an 80mm fan, 240mm for a 120mm fan, 184mm for a 92mm fan, etc.

EDIT: From corner to corner (screw holes) it looks 120mm. For the heck of it, I'll buy a 120mm that can move 110cfm of air, and if it is to big, I'll make it fit...  Unless of course somebody wants to write a tutorial to measure fans... lol... Why cant they just come with the measurements on the bloody mounting position?

Well I could go by eye, but I like my stuff from newegg, and my local PC shop is the most unreliable.... Everything I bought from there has contributed to massive PC failures.... lol I guess I'll get a 120mm its 120mm from corner to corner, if its too big, I dunno what I'll do, probably mount it somehow, or send back...

The measurement refers to the diameter of the fan itself (or more accurately the diameter of the fan aperture), not the corner-to-corner measurement!
Your "120mm" is really an 80mm. The screw holes on a 80mm are about 120mm apart diagonally. A 120mm fan's holes are about 150mm apart.
Believe it or don't- I just measured mine. ;D

But your case may have hole patterns for both sizes... and if not, a little careful drilling will make it work.

Ohh, my bad, maybe I should use the right scale here. ;D  I was using the 1/2 cm:1 cm side of my stupid scale.  Rotty has it right (which I can verify, using the correct side of the ruler now ;D).  Sorry for the confusion. ;)

Why the heck would they put mountings for a worthless 80mm fan? Bah I might MAKE a 120mm fit.... I'll buy an 80mm but it prolly wont fit... But I can always send it back I guess

Who says old junk isnt worth saving? The old HP heatsink fan is mounted, running full rpms fine and dandy, blows maybe 20-30CFM out the back, I think it will actually do nicely, I took the fan mate from my zalman and hooked it to the fan, Now I can control the fan because my onboard motherboard didnt want too. Seems to work fine, no idea if it will make my components any cooler or not.... but I am happy
