Ok, just now, everything returned to normal.  Typing doesn't slow comp down, right clicking doesnt crash explorer.

I have done NOTHING to change anything since I made my last post-not even a reboot.

Gooooood is this strange.  I don't expect this to last, I'm assuming it'll revert back either after I reboot or sooner.  If it does revert after I reboot, I'll know that's the problem.

And thanks for the suggestion Nick, but if you'll look back through the thread you'll see I already said that the HP machine comes with the system repair function already built in (I've used it twice before, so I know the deal)

I'm going to wait for my tech genius to take a look at it first hand before I do anything drastic.  Thanks for all your help, any more input would still be appreciated.

Its been a while since I read the thread so I forgot about the repair being run

I apologize, I was unclear.  I was mearly clarifying that I do plan on running it if I can't get anywhere and that I don't need the XP discs to do it-I have not yet run it.  As of right now, everything is still normal.

Yup, upon reboot the problem resurfaced, so I think we can officially label this an XP problem.  Thanks for everyone's help.

Well, we all missed it.  I'm kicking myself, there was a very simple way to diagnose-boot up the computer in safe mode.  Everything was just fine.  So I got my hands on some advanced diagnostics and it looks like there's a trojan or two that AVG didn't pick up.  Chances are, as I originally suspected, it's a keylog trojan-I didn't bring it up because nothing was showing on AVG and my startup/processes list is clean, meaning it's either running underneath or has attached itself to a legit process.

In that case, I would run checkdisk and have it automatically check and fix any errors. You could also reinstall Windows with the option of just fixing it. This way you don't need to reinstall anything but perhaps the video drivers.
