What the heck?

Postby Katahu » Wed Aug 02, 2006 10:48 pm

I seem to have hit a bit of a problem over here. Every time I unzip a compressed file, my system takes almost forever to complete the unzipping process even for files that are barely one MB in weight. Usually, the process takes only a minute for files that are like 20 MB while it takes mere seconds for anything less than a MB. But now that's no longer the case. The process now tells me that it will take "five days and one hour" to unzip a 40MB zip file. The problem occurs for every single zip file I download.

Any clues on how to fix this or what's causing this?

Are you using the Windows zip utility?
Is your AV scanning the file as its unpacking?

That is odd that it is taking that long to unzip so maybe try another zip utility. I like IZArc
http://www.izarc.org/

I really like this utility, its easy to use and works with all type files not only zips.

I'll try out that utility you pointed out. As for AV scanning, how do I look that up and is that bad?

He meant is you're anti-virus slowing things down I believe.

That wouldn't explain the extremely long results.

Something is messed alright.

It might snap back to normal after you install an archiver.

If the AV is sus, just remove it, and re-install it if it's not the culprit.

I tried the software that Politically provided and it works wonders. I can manage a lot of things with that tool. Thanks. As for the one I used before, it was the stock one that came with XP.

I'm not surprised that all of this began to occur shortly after I started using FS Auto Start [which shuts down certain services]. Chances are that the service that deals with compressed files may have been screwed up by FS Auto Start.

You could actually use the archiver that makes .ZIP files, Winzip

The good news is that I see nothing [nada, zip, zilch], even when the operating system files have been allowed to showing up completely in the tools > folder option > View menu.

The bad news is that I guess FS Auto Start may have done something to the system that may have caused the slowdown.

I have had this problem for about half a month and "nothing" has been affected [except the unzipping speed] so I guess it is "not" a virus.

Glad to hear that IZARc is working, I too noticed that the Windows zip utility seemed slow (not as slow as yours) and someone here pointed me to IZArc and I love it.

Hope your issues are solved!

WinZIP sucks because it can't open RAR and ACE files. It is not worth paying money for it. If you're going to buy something I suggest PowerArchiver 2006. It is $10 cheaper than Winzip and can open much more file formats.

BTW a small amount of people that use Winzip actually registered it. You can use it over 30 days, you just get a nag screen.

However, I wouldn't pay for something I can get for free.

Depends what you want it for. I only need it for working with zipfiles, which it's pretty good at.

BTW a small amount of people that use Winzip actually registered it. You can use it over 30 days, you just get a nag screen.

After that you're fixed as it's no longer useable, unlike earlier versions. I was given the registration as a thankyou for helping someone many years ago. It also opens up extra features which have come in very handy.
