I am soooo tempted to just order a couple of SATA drives right now......... look what you guys have done!

Evil Congo: "Go on! Order the drives, you deserve it!"

Angel Congo: "You need other things around the house, a new car, Christmas is coming up, save your money!"

Evil Congo: "ORDER THE DRIVES NOW! Don't listen to him! He's a Wuss!"

Angel Congo: "Choke #$% Splutter *#$ GASP!#$"

he he he he he

chOKe-EM!!!!

....one small tid-bit:

If you are new to RAID and you want to experience it without risk to the system, set up a WindowsXP dual boot, leaving your current OS the way it is. That way you can toy with the new RAID-0 setup and not risk your current installation. I run all my systems on dual boot setups. I split my single ATA or SATA data drive into 2 partitions. Partition 1 (30gig) holds my secondary OS/programs install so I can boot into it at any time in case of an emergency. Partition 2 (200+gig) is the data storage area. The RAID-0 setup is the primary boot and use setup. Even if I loose it, I can immediantly boot onto the ATA or SATA OS install.

Have fuN!

Ok, I would like to know the best procedure then, my drives are ordered, (Wifey still in the dark cuz the devil made me do it).

Is it possible to set up the raid array from my current OS? and then add it as a boot drive/multiboot option?

Or do I set up the raid array starting with the CDROM/floppy disk raid setup and install windows to that first and then somehow add this current Hdd as a second op sys?

I ordered 2 x 160gb Seagate SATA NCQ drives.

BTW, I think I can choose the boot drive from a menu at startup with this chipset, also in bios if I'm correct.

2-160gig HDD will produce a single 300-320gig RAID-0 drive. A RAID-0 array will be a single partition of enormous size. Since video editing requires a huge amount of HDD space I use large SATA or SCSI HDD

Thanks Nick,

I have a 160gb on the Primary ATA IDE as my boot drive now.

I thought there might an easy install of a raid setup from my current  windows OS.

I don't mind re-installing everything from scratch to get the best config.

I think this is an nforce raid controller.

I haven't recieved the drives yet, they'll prolly send them out today.

Hey buddy,

Can you give me an update as to how it goes when you've set it up?

I currently have a 120gig HDD (20 gig reserved for Linux). I'm considering getting 2 new SATA drives (around 120 gig each), and using RAID 0. I'll then do a fresh install on Windows on the new RAID setup, and keep the current one for back up.

What would be the best way to transfer files from the new RAID to this current Hard Drive? Would Windows find the single HDD (not using RAID) in My Computer when I boot in RAID?

Hopefully soon with RAID 0! :D

I cancelled the order, they sold my drives to someone else over the weekend and wanted me to upgrade to the next most expensive option.

I wasted 4 hrs and 4 long distance phone calls already on this, plus your forum time here and my forum time elsewhere.

PC suppliers suck and they don't give a rat's arse about you or your 5 year association with them and the countless thousands of dollars you generate for them each year.

Any PC supplier out there who has the service and loyalty of their customers at heart, please feel free to PM me for supply of PC hardware within Australia.

The rest of the greedy mongrels can suck eggs.

Wow, that sucks. They actually told you they sold them to someone else? That's a great way to lose customers.  :-/

Don't you have a local electronics/pc hardware shop around? Don't give up on it yet. Your system is screaming for  a RAID setup. ;)

I'll get the drives, just this order get stuffed up took the glamour away for a while.

For an area with a sparse population (50,000 in a pretty large region), we have so many "local" PC shops it's mind boggling. I've tried to deal with several of them and they are full of promise until you actually try and order something, then it's like, "Oh no sorry, we can't possibly match those prices." Of course they can, they are just to greedy to do it. If any one of the locals had the brains to sell at city prices, they would capture the entire local market. As it is, local prices are 50 to 100% higher on most items.

Every single local supplier just seems intent on ripping you off for whatever they can, no scruples at all, they sicken me. All the shops are full of old junk, even the new stuff is outdated usually.

Normally, my Brisbane supplier is pretty good. They have a fairly large staff, (I estimate around 30), and they hire every few months as a rule. I can tell when a new guy answers the phone and I usually ask for one of the regulars so I don't get pissed about.

You walk into their office and it's standing room only, a crowd is usually waiting to be served. It's a very hectic place and you can see the staff are under a certain amount of pressure, I expect the odd mixup.

It's just that this time, someone didn't bother to make up my order on Friday afternoon as promised, and of course the Saturday morning rush stripped them of stock leaving me without my drives.

This wouldn't annoy me if I hadn't gone to so much time and trouble verifying the order in the first place, it's just sloppy business is all, and they don't give a rats because they just need more staff to cart the bags of money across the road to the bank.

Oh, I don't know what's it's like where any of you live, but in Brisbane, all the major online stores are chaos on Saturdays, and usually through the week as well.

I've seen lines a hundred metres long and 4 abreast waiting to get into Gamedude for example. It's mind boggling to think of the turnover they are doing. That was when Gamedude had a tiny little shop in the suburbs. Now they have a large warehouse and showroom, huge anti-Ramraid pillars and steel bars that make you feel like it's a tour of Alcatraz lol. More like Fort Knox I'd say.

also, I set up daily automatic backups of all the folders I want to keep safe from the RAID array (or from other issues) to the backup partition of the ATA or SATA drive, such as my entire Flight Simulator 9 folder and the FS9.cfg files. That way I never loose my effects, aircraft, gauges or anything else in flight simulator. To recover an entire FS9 installation, I simply reinstall the program then copy/paste the backup FS9 folder, overwriting the base installation. I rarely use the backup however there have been times when it saved me allot of time after an uninstallable add-on damages my FS installation.

Some intresting info.
I use raid at present on my current system, and i do like it alot, never had it go down. Though i agree with NIck on that its best practise to have a seperate drive for all the downloads and windows favorites, my documents, received files folders.
But i been doing that for years anyway as i always like to spring clean format and reinstall windows every so often.
Just in the process of upgrading my pc and getting a athlon 64 X2 3800 system, with the a8n deluxe motherboard.
Plan to put 2 x sata II drive on it in raid array.

No one has really discussed this topic in too much detail yet. I know the benefit of running 2 normal sata drive in a stripe raid array.
However what about 2x Sata II drives, will this be significantly faster than 2x Sata I drives?

IM going ahead with it anyway, but i not heard much about this.

Check the specs on the drives.

1. Access time in /ms (lower is better)
2. Disk RPM (faster is better)
3. Burst speed rating (higher is better)
4. Disk Write speed specs or typical benchmarks (read speed spec is not quite as important as the write speed)
5. Controller ratings and typical benchmarks (Promise tends to be slower than Nvida, Via or others such as ATTO)

It does not matter what the drive is named, labled or package rated, what matters are the items listed above.

SCSI drives are the only HDD's on the market (that I know of) that are rated in true MB/s (megabytes per second)
