Actually, dsl isn't expensive.

SBC yahoo offers dsl thats the same price as or in some places CHEAPER than dialup.

I've got an idea that you lucky lot, over your side of the Pond, generally get "things" cheaper than we poor souls over our side of the Pond... :'(...!

My monthly, no contract, dial-up, "Anytime" service costs me

I would be more than happy to pay a higher price for DSL it is just the favt it isn't offered where I live, they say not enough people live out in the area, I don't know how many is "enough" since within the past year about 100 new homes have been put up in the neighborhood.

They give the estimate of 5 years before it is offered, which means by then there will be new technology that is better, lol.
Maybe like the new "outlet box" that delivers broadband via the power lines ;)

i've just installed an external 56k modem for my mum as her computer isn't Broadband ready, just so she can research the family tree and talk to me online instead of ringing me and because hardly anyone in Runcorn is on 56k Dial-up now it is almost as fast as the 1mb broadband package that most company's are offering.

I first started out on Dial-up earlier this year when i got my flat just so i could, find a better job (and it worked) and that enabled me to do certain things that i needed to do, i know people who are on Dial-up and are loving every minute of it because its the easy way onto the Internet and easy to set up and for some people the best option.

in all fairness though the price of broadband/dsl is going up every year, at the moment i'm paying around

...an interesting little snippet... ;)...!

About a year or so ago, I heard on the grape-vine that the telephone company, (British Telecom), were getting so concerned about the loss of revenue due to dial-up users blocking incoming calls on their own phone line, (no-one can contact a dial-up user by phone whilst they are connected to  the Internet), that the phone company seriously considered allowing the dial-up users to obtain Broadband at a nominal cost, or even for free!.
Unfortunately for me and the merry band of dial-up users, so many users have now bitten the bullet and purchased the much more expensive Broadband option, that the free idea has now been dropped...!
...Buggar... >:(...!

If, and when, the cost of Broadband drops to the same price as dial-up I may consider going over to it... ::)...!
...in the meantime, my "Anytime" dial-up option suits me admirably. I rarely download very large files, and although turning pages can be a little slow at times, I am imbibed with sufficient patience to wait... ;D...!
LOL...!

Cheers, all Happy Dial-Up Users... 8)...!

Pablo The Patient.

P.S. Interestingly, with my excellent hardware set-up, I have no problems playing on-line, with everything maxed, using dial-up... 8)...!
..so there... ;D...!
LOL...!
