I've got my old 1982, 40,000 mile, Austin Allegro 1.5 HL, bronze, 4-door saloon, stored unused and collecting dust in my garage since 1990.

I wonder how much it would fetch at Sotheby's Auction... ;) ....!

If you believe Clarkson and Co then you'll have to pay someone to take it away,  that having been said I worked at a BL garage in the 70's/80's and drove cars from all makes from Rolls Royce's to 850cc Mini's and have to say the Allegro's were not that bad, esp the 1750's which went like the proverbial rat up a wotset. Even the dreaded Marina was pretty good compared to some of the JAP stuff at the time, my mate had an estate and he did well over 150000mls with no major problems.

Cheers

Yeah, I’d second that. I had an Aggro and a Marina (Ital) as company cars in the 70’s and ragged them something cruel. I took the Aggro to some impossible places, such as ploughed fields, muddy dirt tracks and building sites and never once got stuck. The Aggro had a “rubbery” feel to it and gave the impression it was about to break. Didn’t bother me though, I thrashed the nuts off it anyway :D Of course, they were plebmobiles, and one didn’t expect the luxury that Clarkson would have been enjoying in his Jag, Merc, Beemer etc. I also owned a VW Beetle 1300 (also hated by Clarkson & co.) in metallic silver, and it was definitely the most powerful pussy magnet I’ve ever had  Wish I’d bought one of the campervans now

On the subject of old bikes, the most fun I’ve had with a bike was my old MZ TS250 stinkin’ stroker. It was a mechanical disgrace, and to call it a “rat” bike would be an insult to rats, but it had character in bucket loads and remains one of my fondest memories of motor cycling.

So I say cherish your Aggro Fozzer; it’s an appreciating classic now. And finally, a big yah-boo-sucks to Clarkson with his Mercedes CLK mid life crisis penis extension, and all idiots like him. Money can’t buy coolness 8-)

My dear ole Dad had the same Allegro which he bought new when he retired. I drove it once on a rare visit back home and never thought it was as bad as they claimed. Dad garaged it on his 80th birthday and by the time he died at age 89 the car was absolutely filled to the brim with knotted up plastic carrier bags. I kid you not, Mum and Dad went shopping every thursday and bought the same stuff every week. The freezer was held shut by housebricks and all the plastic bags were knotted and chucked into the Allegro. Dad promised to will me the car, but when we buried him, we buried the car too so to speak and donated it to the local fire brigade for practice. Apparently, the car refused to burn and stayed a rusted out shell for years in the Fire hall back yard. Maybe Fozzer resurrected it, could it be the same one? Heaven forbid!

.... :D ...!

The one marvellous invention that my trusty BMC Austin Allegro 1.5 HL had, that none of my Motorcycles ever had, was its Hydrolastic Suspension!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrolastic

An excellent invention for ensuring that the vehicle remained stable and upright in corners, rather than wallowing around with normal spring suspension!

It was always a very comfortable ride!

I suspect that the device would be quite dangerous on a motorcycle, when we need to bank-over to get around corners!... :o ...!

Paul...banking on good suspension!.... ...!

With a good-old clean, polish, and a bit of TLC, my 40,000 mile Allegro would be good for the road again, for an enthusiast!

Mine is the best of the bunch.
The last to be built; 1982 Series 3, 1.5 HL. Purchased new in 1982!

I finally gave up driving motor cars in 1990 with ever increasing traffic congestion, and have used my various motorcycles for transport ever since!
...no traffic jams....negligible maintenance cost..... and free parking!.... ...!

There, told yer! My Dad's old resurrected Allegro. Is it blue? with a scratch on the near-side bumper where I couldn't quite gauge the drive-way gate-post? :angelic-blueglow:

Reminding me of painful memories of kick-starting my 1948 "Vincent" HRD, 998cc, vee-twin, Rapide, motorcycle...>>>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWb2t8T7mX4

Poor Lady, I could have wept for her!.... ...!

The curse of "Magneto's" with weak magnets, producing a slight glow at the sparking plugs....

..if you were really lucky, on a good day, and the good Lord was on your side!... ...!

Kick-starting an old vintage motorcycle may impress and amuse the on-lookers, but nothing can beat the push of a start-button to bring the monster into life....!

...trust me!.... ...!

My other 1983 vintage Yamaha RXS 100 two-stroke motorcycle, with its simple, reliable CDI ignition system, merely requires a quick flick of the ankle to kick-start her....

...but there again, she is only 98cc...and low compression!...and no weak Magnetos!.... ...!

I have almost died in the past, trying to kick-start my old Motorcycles!.... ...!

Magnetos may make sense on my Sim Cessna 150 Aerobat in the air....but not on a bloody great, old vintage Harley vee-twin, at ground level!... ....!

Just waiting for my new clutch assembly to arrive (from China?) for my Honda Cruiser now.
Longing for the time when I can actually find neutral when at a standstill!... ...!

Paul....2 degrees C...so no Biking today!..... :D ...!

P.S...I've just watched that video again, and I reckon she needs a cuddle from us all, for her efforts!....... ... ...!

Latest....

The clutch-side engine gasket has arrived, first-class post, from the lovely lads and lassies at Wemoto...>>> http://www.wemoto.com/
...so I am just waiting now for the new clutch assembly to arrive (from China?.... ...) so that I can ride my bike to my motorcycle mechanic Son's house in Gloucestershire to get the whole caboodle job done!... :D ...!

The weather is totally naff at the moment, and no motorcycling, so that ensures that I stay indoors waiting for the UPS man to knock on my door, with a parcel and a big grin!... ...!

I would like to repaint/have repainted, Daisy, gloss black instead of the well-worn (rusty in places) dark blue which she presently is....

...petrol tank, rear fender, front fender, and side panels, but I need someone who knows what they are doing regarding painting stuff!......!

Image

Gloss black would/will contrast nicely with all the shiny chrome that adorns Daisy at the moment!.... :D ...!

More news later.... ...!

Paul...still waiting for nice weather (and my new clutch) to arrive... .... ...!

I used to use Born To Be Wild at Tewkesbury as their paintwork was superb. I've an idea they have moved now; check this out:

http://www.reborntobewild.com/

Of course you can always do it yourself on the cheap but it's hard to get the decals just right.

I used Valspar on my last effort. As long as you use a good quality brush it looks great. My suggestion is to take a picture of the decals then use a fine modelling knife to cut around them. Just place them where you want them just before the paint is dry. :auto-sportbike:

Daisy looks nice and relaxing Paul, I guess at your age you no longer want to mould yourself across a fuel tank.....?

I am now getting back into the saddle after a 15 year break. I have a Honda Blackbird CBR 1100 XX. She is from 1999 but only has 50, 000 km on her, so over her life she has averaged about 300 km per month.... She was a great find, like new.
