Microsoft - Flight Simulator X Steam Edition ???

Postby Dickert » Thu Feb 11, 2016 11:35 am

I have been looking at the Microsoft - Flight Simulator X Steam Edition and am wondering what the difference is from plain old FSX? Also, will it run in Win 10? I can't get my FSX to load now that my confuser self installed Win 10. And are there any links around that show how to fix what ever needs fixing to get FSX to load in Win 10? Yes, I am out of touch... What's the sim people are running now? I'd love to update my aircraft but don't even know what the standard is now. Need pointing.... anyone?

Well, you PC can only update if you have auto updates set. So, if it has been set, then you have efectively told it to upgrade itself.
FSX should work without any problems.
If you are having errors, please tell us what they are & we can possibly help.
People are using FSX, FSx:SE, P3D & even still FS9.
No real standard, Let us know the specs of your PC & we can suggest.

Dear members of the forum,
I know that I am new here but what I experienced during the last weeks by installing FSX is frustrating and, I believe, it will apply to more and more fligtsimmers in the future.
November last year, because my XP platform is an AMD Athlon Dual Core X64 2,2 GHz and is not the finest machne for FSX, I bought a nice laptop X64 system, with Windows 10 first edition 64 Bit.
First install of FSX went very smooth and I could run FSX with all the aircraft carriers available, AI carriers, and so on with the max. setting. Noticeable were some crashes, that seemed to reduce after some tuning.
Because the windows updates did not install error free, in February I decided to set up the LP with a windows 10 clean install.
When Windows installation was complete, the FSX and my model aircraft sim PhoenixRC did not install at all.
Research has been that far, that FSX and the most other sims are based on direct X 9c and in the meantime, after Windows 10 final edition of November 2015 we are looking into DX 12.0
As long as somebody does not show that FSX runs on DX 12.0, I believe that DX 12.0 is the FSX killer, whether that applies to the steam edition, I can not say.
So be advised, if you do not want to loose the FSX, do not upgrade to Windows 10 64 Bit.
Originally Windows 10, 64 Bit comes with DX 11.2 ,Windows 10, 32 Bit comes with DX 10.0. The first upgrade of windows 10, 64 bit even with the graphics driver can give you DX 12.0.

Have fun

I am currently running on Windows 10 64 bit with no problems what so ever and yes i went through the November update that fixed a lot of problems windows 10 had. I run both FSX and FS9 no problems. So I think you are misinformed
But as for DX12 the only issue here is the graphic card you use has to support it, so unless you recently just bought your card the odss are it will not support DX12. My card will but I am still using DX9

I also upgraded to W10 64bit and FSX was not affected ... (though in many ways I wish I hadn't 'upgraded' - can't see any advantages)

Regards to FSX Steam >> I wouldn't install it. From everything I have read it is just FSX but with pesters to buy stuff and less control over what you can add.

Stick to FSX Acceleration - don't bother with Steam. You have more easy install freeware at your fingertips and no one is suggesting you spend your hard earned $$$ on stuff you don't really want.

Hello Dickert, I am running FSX-Steam Edition on my Windows 10 64-bit 'puter.
It runs flawlessly and I love it. I will no longer use the FSX boxed version. FSX-SE runs so smoothly with great frame-rates and I also love the whole STEAM way of doing things pertaining to FSX.
My aircraft and also my ORBX sceneries run seamlessly with no issues. You can run it online or also Offline if you wish. One of the great benefits of FSX-SE for me is that it has TOTALLY ELIMINATED the dreaded "out of memory" errors that could occur at the end of long flights/trips.

One thing I suggest you do is get onto YOUTUBE and look up all of the many 'Tubes that explain all of the improvements in FSX-SE. Also look at all the explanations on settings and other suggestions. Before long you will know all you need to know about FSX-SE and you will have watched numerous flights in FSX-SE to see for yourself how it performs for people. From there you can make your decisions on future actions.
I hope you get flying again soon and enjoy yourself in the air.

I currently have both MS FSX and FS SE on my notebook computer. I loaded SE as I was concerned that MS is no longer supporting FSX and was also concerned about a lost or damaged program disk. Since Steam is fully supporting FSX the entire program AAND the automatic updates are maintained on the Steam cloud. Consequently if I have a major computer failure the FSX program is FULLY restored by simply signing on the your STEAM account. As for "frequent" pop up trying to sell you things the only thing that occurs is on signon a page comes up with new items available which you, may or may not, be interested in. If not close the frame and it will not come back. As others have said the program seems to run better and smother with significantly better frame rate. I have not, however, changed to MS 10 as I am having no issues with Win 8.1. Can't recommend SE high enough and don't worry about add ons as once you understand the structure of SE you will have no problems.

Good luck,
Jim

FSXSE is not a bad way for someone new to Flight simulation. There are advantages going this way. The biggest is there are no disks involved and updates are handled through Steam.
Now if you have been a constant user of the Microsoft version than you will notice some differences. The main reason that the steam edition runs smoother has to do with the fact that Steam had to limit the scenery as this program has to be able to run on there servers without bogging them down. Now mind you I am in no way stating that Steam does not make a good product
it is one has to expect limits. Al in all Steam does a great job I have a Train simulator that I run using Steam and one other very old game called DEUSEX. I was also one of many beta testers for the Steam edition and was quite pleased. If one is having a problem with installing a addon through Steam all you have to to is to let them know and they will work out a solution for you.
It really does not get any better than that.
So as long as you do not expect miracles than FSXSE is a great way to experience Flight simulation
My hat goes off for the team at STEAM they do a great job.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. While all these FSX issues were going on at my end, my confuser died. It was almost time to upgrade anyway.

So I now rebuilt the thing using an Intel I7-6700K CPU at 4.2 GHz. A radiator cooling system with dual fans, along with the Asus Z170 1511 PRO motherboard, 32 GB of RAM, GeForce GTX 970 with 4 MB memory. and a solid state drive. Then I loaded WIN 10 again, and the boxed FSX and Acceleration, and put almost all the sliders up to full. WOW! Had my first flight about an hour ago with a bunch of prop jobs, and then flew my HD-1 Swift. Problem now is that I have never figured out how to update that aircraft from the FS9 sim to FSX. It is missing the instruments in FSX.

Now back to the drawing board to bring this aircraft forward. GMax seems to be dead so I need to dig into BLENDER and the FSX SDK. Looks like another four year project on the go...

Cool web page and I have to ask do you feel the need for speed :?:
That is what I call strapping a Jet engine to your BUT. I hope you took your airsickness pills before flying this thing
As for converting A old aircraft to work with FSX I think the biggest differences is in the model and the way the textures are created. As for GMAX I still have the huge book and the disk that came with it. If you want it let me know and I will gladly send it to you free of charge. When I tried my hand at it I nearly went bald trying to make the P38 that was included with the disk.
I did manage to make a small building that I use for a line shack in FS2004 but have no idea if GMAX has been updated or if it will work with FSX
8-)
Lots of luck on the rebuild.

Hi Garymbuska.

Nice to here you like the page. If you still have FS9 running somewhere, you should take this Coke bottle rocket for a ride. But hang on.
As for the book you have, I have the same one. The problem is not with GMax but with digging all through the FSX SDK. Then it is easy enough to apply the differences. It's finding those differences in the first place. But then GMax is a dead end, so what's the point? That is why I really want to bring the aircraft into BLENDER. I also need the help of an instrument designer since I do not know how to program.

Over.....
ps, did you check out the guitars?

I have installed FSX Steam edition and found it is a lot more stable with better frame rates and all of my original aircraft
fly no problem, except for the Milviz F15 (the engines will not start, correctly ) and the Just flight Canberra flys ok just the
the nosewheel configurator causes a crash.
